I should’ve read the playlist description lol. “The MCS songs I play will be determined at soundcheck of that day”

Well that was fantastic. I’ll spoiler tag my way too long synopsis.

The set list was great and they played longer than I was expecting (it was a full hour and a half show). Justin was nervous but also seemed excited, and his band was a lot of fun. It was the guitarist from Farewell Continental, the drummer who played on the album, an old friend of Justin’s on bass, and someone named Lady Elisa (edit: just kidding I heard it as that, but it was actually Lydia Liza - @lydializamusic) who Justin just met for this tour (they know each other through a mutual friend). There were definitely some spots where they’re working some things out but they sounded great overall.

Justin did a lot of talking and interacting with the audience which was fun. For the Motion City songs it was just Justin on guitar because he said it didn’t feel right to play those songs with a different band, which I thought was touching and actually made the songs feel more special. Of course, these were the songs the crowd sang loudest, but it was a pretty respectful audience overall.

When I first got there I was worried about turnout but the room was full but not packed by the time Justin went on stage. I’d estimate it was like 2/3rds sold out, so not a bad turnout.

I also had the biggest smile finally seeing Farewell Continental songs live.

    Set list:
First 7 songs of In the Drink
New song from an upcoming EP (and also I believe was included on the VIP 7”)
    Everything That Hurts
    Total Devastation
    Unreleased Farewell Continental song
    Do You Wanna Tangle?
    It Had To Be You
    When You’re Around
    LG Fuad
The rest of In the Drink

Also it sounds like the no -In the Drink songs are going to be a little different each night (and once they have more time to rehearse extra songs)

i remember I went to the Farewell Continental tour and the guitarist kept doing weird abusive shit to his guitar like scrapping it off the side of the stage or on the ground and at one point he went to like grind it against the edge of the stage and smacked me in the head (i think he felt super bad and apologized after lmao)

This album is growing on me still. Parts of this remind me of Go which is nice since that was one of my fave MCS albums. My faves are Undone, Moonbeam, and Sooner. Going to try to listen to Farewell Continental songs that are being played on tour tonight before I go tomorrow.

@mattfreaksmeout did pronoun. or Van Dale play first? edit: Nevermind it looks like Van Dale is an extra opener in my city and not on the full tour.

Yeah I love this. It’s far from perfect - it might even be far from great - but I adore it. I’m A Liar is fantastic and Undone makes me feel things in a way the best of MCS did.

The show in Michigan was so much fun. Justin is sounding fantastic on this tour, and his banter on stage is as fun as always. Album is still very good and the songs translated great live. I'm really happy he's continuing writing music and touring. Can't wait to see where he goes from here.

Just seeing this, but yea we only had pronoun, BUT pronoun is really really great and I strongly encourage everyone to check them out! I've been listening to them a lot since the show.

    I’m a Liar definitely is.

I went on a rainy run with this album this morning and honestly I might even like it more than the last two MCS records now

Anchor has been the one that keeps poppin up in my head lately. The best of the album really does compete with Motion City, and there's nothing on here I don't enjoy at all. Ready Player One is my least favorite, and even that is still a fun enough song. I'm really really happy with this album.

rating was supposed to be a 3.5 or 4 if I remember correctly, but I'm not complaining

Hey cool, I went to Edinboro. Enjoyed the Reader while I was there and if I remember right I interviewed with someone for some kind of an internship there in my final year of college. We ended up talking about Modest Mouse as their last album had just come out and I said it was terrible. He didn't seem to like that. lmao no internship for me

  18. Woah, small world! My brother went there and I went to Gannon University. The Reader has been a great source of extra income and just a way to keep me writing, as I've had an awful case of writer's block since the summer ended and I moved out to Pittsburgh. Also holy shit lol that's hilarious, or at least now it is. I wonder if that was my editor, Nick, or someone else.

Yep, went to Edinboro and was writing album reviews for their paper from time to time, then ended up working in Oil City for a spell but journalism pays so horribly that I had to move on. I believe it was Ben Speggen, but I could be wrong, this was all the way back in early 2015 and I drank a lot in college, so who really knows.

Anyways, good review, I'll definitely keep an eye out for your stuff in the Erie Reader from now on!

  20. Ahhh, yes, I know Speggen kind of second-handedly. He was the managing editor at that time, but I believe he just contributes now. I haven't had a lot of personal interaction with him. Still, cool connection! I generally do two reviews and two or three spotlights for them per issue. Appreciate the kind words!

  25. Forgot to post this the other week. Justin had Josh & Claudio from MCS at his hometown show and they played a few MCS songs together. It was really fun. Strange hearing them with no bass or moog though, haha.
