I got forced into teaching two Honors English 9 classes this year....I've never taught english before. We just have a large class of freshmen and I was dumb enough to take my English praxis a few years ago.

Any ideas would be welcome. I believe we're reading Romeo and Juliet, TKAM, annnnd of mice and men? Not sure on the last one.

My kids always liked The Lord of the Flies too, as stereotypical as that sounds for 9th grade lit.

 

Only have one class that’s 32 students instead of four like last year. Good news but the big class is a SPED class, so worried I still won’t be able to differentiate appropriately

Also was stuck with a Public Speaking elective, which I have no experience teaching..

 

I'm not a teacher (yet) but I am currently taking a course called Literature for Adolescents where we focus on what makes literature for young adults good/appropriate, etc. Anyway, one of the books that we'll have to explore and is apparently really popular among young kids is Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe. I haven't read it yet so I can't vouch for it but it seems interesting enough and might be a good change of pace after visiting the classics.

Set in El Paso, Texas, 1987, the novel follows two Mexican-American boys, Aristotle "Ari" Mendoza and Dante Quintana, their friendship, and their struggles with racial and ethnic identity, sexuality, and family relationships.

Might be worth looking into? I dunno.

 

Teaching English is dope as hell. I do everything that I want and no one questions me

 

I taught Night last year, always an engaging read for students and there’s tons of lessons online to use

 

I’m only teaching one full-length work this year, probably Gatsby

 

I do “The Body”, Fences, Gatsby and Macbeth. Wanna do Catcher as well

 

I work in a Montessori school with elementary aged kids, a job that I love, but I originally got a degree in high school English primarily because I wanted to teach lit. So I love seeing these posts about which books y’all are reading with your classes. They sound like some good choices for sure.

 

Thanks for all the suggestions y’all. I think the entire department is doing those books I listed so I’m probably sticking with those 3. We spend the first marking period teaching literary devices through short stories, which is an entire unit mapped out already which is nice. We use some cool short stories too, monkeys paw, most dangerous game, white chocolate, etc

 

Montessori schools are so beautiful. I tried to incorporate it into my classroom when I taught but I had so many behaviors the kids would destroy all my beautiful hard work lol

 

Book Suggestions for Middle School English (Grades 5-7)??

 

I miss teaching preschool so much. I would love to teach in one where I don't feel set up to fail and I can actually have time to execute all my ideas. Wish I was motivated to start my own lol. My friend did and she makes way more than when she worked for one.

And ngl the woman who teaches my former class follows me on pinterest and I low-key pin things that I hope she sees and incorporates lol

 

My favorites are probably The Outsiders (more for the 7th graders) and The Giver. Every time I’ve taught either the kids love it and get a lot out of it.

 

Love those books, they're on my list. The Giver was my ALL TIME FAVORITE. Still think about it sometimes.

 

I'm late on the listing major texts that I teach, but I teach: Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, Catcher, The Crucible, Jesus Camp, The Bluest Eye, 13th, and Gatsby.

 

Today was just one of those fucking days. Last period class drove me fucking nuts. Currently trying to figure out how hard doing a masters in guidance or library/media specialist would be.

 

Sometimes I miss being a teacher even tho I know it's not my calling. Sometimes I think I could go back to it again but that might be my rose tinted glasses. Idk if I could do it with high risk kids again but then I would miss the social work aspect I think. Idk idk. If I had a partner who had a decent job I could see myself being a preschool teacher.

 

Still trying to weigh whether I should train as a school teacher. For those of you who teach the 7-11 age bracket, what kind of challenges do you face with the work?

I think I'd love being a high school librarian/media specialist...but I also don't know of any really affordable programs around me ugh.

 

im a high school librarian assistant right now. its easy and good as hell. i dont know what the librarian makes but its a private school im sure its solid. being an archivist at a uni would be even better but theres probably like 10 of those jobs opening every year

Unfortunately they don't hire assistants at public schools around here....so basically I'd be waiting for a job to open up in the district because someone retires more or less haha. We do have 3 high schools in the district though, and I think the librarian at my alma mater is old-ish.

I'm just really starting to question my ability to stay in the classroom long term between days I had like yesterday and my anxiety. Teaching through anxiety attacks isn't fun. Being a librarian and helping kids find and analyze information/sources and etc would be fun and would come with less speaking in front of a classroom alone time.

They do tend to get a lot of the extra responsibilities thrown on them though, which makes sense since they don't have to plan, really. But they do a lot of the test coordination and other extra stuff like that.
