Also, the deal they offered was right in line with that Gurley/DJ actually got (signing bonus a little weaker...but 2yr and 3yr counts the same or more)

So, he turned down 3/45 functionally guaranteed...in search of a better deal that no current RB has actually signed. Both DJ and Gurley didnt get more than ~$30mil in full guarantees.

And if the Steelers dont budge on the roster exemption thing (they shouldnt), he's gonna forfeit about $10mil. Meaning his next deal will have to be about 4yrs/$65mil/$35mil full guaranteed at signing to be worth more than the deal he could have taken. Which is a full $2mil AAV higher than Gurley signed.

Basically, Bell isnt in a Cousins situation, like he thinks he is. The Redskins never offered Cousins fair market value (or really, anything close) in the first 2 years. The Steelers got right about to what Gurley/DJ got (signing bonus was a little soft, but I think 2/3yr breakdowns were similar).

And Cousins had a clear path to FA where he could get exactly the deal he wanted by year 3. At a more valuable position (see: fully guaranteed contract, no trade clause, no transition tag after year 3...things no RB will ever get).

I also wonder, if Cousins had sat out 10 games last year, if he'd have gotten the deal he did with the Vikings.

    Synopsis of Jags problems:
Jags STILL need to draft four premium positions - a QB, WR, T, DE. Really fuckin hard to do all four in one offseason.

Outside of the worst WR corps & the worst long term starting QB in the league, I love our starting lineup. But we still have more needs on the 53-roster, than we can fill in 2019, and that is discouraging for me to realize. As much talent as we have, a few injuries show that our whole team can collapse due to lack of depth - especially in the trenches. The specific injuries we have legit have turned us into a team that's soft against the run, and can't score.

    DEFENSE
Those bolded things multiplied together = TIRED DEFENSE, hence why even a healthy Jack, Ramsey, Yannick, Bouye, & Telvin havent been playing that well. We aren't keeping the ball at ALL** (to be addressed later) and we've got our defense chasing runningbacks all day because Campbell & Dareus are playing hurt.

So we started calling zone coverage. Eventually you gotta give the LB a break from the full-field wind sprints and let them sit down in an area of the field. BUT that takes Bouye & Ramsey out of their element, & for zone defense to work, your DL's gotta get in there. Gotta get early contact on the RB before he reaches the second level, gotta get to the QB before receivers get open between zones.

And they aren't getting pressure because 1) they are ALSO tired, so they don't have that fresh burst off the line 2) Campbell is hurt and Yannick hasn't gotten home on his pressures -- much less production from the top 2 guys who got half our sacks and most our FF last year.

It looks like Ramsey, Bouye, Jack & Telvin are struggling, but really the problem is they've had to cover for longer. We're calling zone to fix that, but that's just putting more pressure back on our DL and taking our best coverage guys out of the play. Which then turns into, wow we can't stop the pass OR run now. And the cycle of our defense getting tired & risking injury just keeps snowballing.

If I was DC Todd Wash I'd just keep calling man-to-man & blitzes, I'd rather our defense get tired doing what they do best, than to do something we are bad at and give up all kinds of yards anyway. But that still might not solve the problem without that pass rush.

    THE BOTTOM LINE -
You see us give up 40 points and you want to blame the back end of the defense, but thinking critically about the situation, it's actually our defensive line that needs to step up for the defensive chemistry to click back into place. And it's fair to expect that because DL is our deepest position. Yannick and Fowler should still be going OFF and Taven Bryan & Abry Jones SHOULD be good backups for Campbell & Dareus - none of that is happening right now.

    OFFENSE
**Why aren't we keeping the ball, you ask?

Well obviously people's first answer is Bortles & the WR suck but we still won despite that last year. The difference is:

    1) OT position DESPERATE for depth. Our good LT and our bad backup LT are on IR, leaving us with a third string and a fourth round rookie (Richardson). Our RT also fucking sucks -- Richardson can either replace him or be Cam's backup on the left, he can't do both. You saw Bortles with a good line last year, welcome to Bortles with a third string LT and Norwell / Linder missing time.

    2) RB position got decimated. I was mad that we didn't even run 30 times across THREE games with Yeldon, until i saw he was playing like 94% of the snaps. We straight up cannot afford to hurt him TOO, on top of Fournette & Grant. This has MURDERED our offensive balance and turned us into a lopsided passing team, despite being horrible at it. You saw Bortles only having to throw 25 times last year, welcome to what it's like when he throws 40-50.

The trade for Hyde was completely a necessity, we were about to sharpen that pencil down to the eraser. Obviously this offense was built to be carried by Fournette. We are nothing without that 30-touch per game power runningback.

    3) No Lee, No Hurns, No more ASJ or Niles Paul. None of those receivers are good. But they were above Dede and Cole on the depth charts for a reason. Those TE aren't good, but we acquired both this offseason for a reason. It's easy to act like subpar players getting hurt is no biggie, but it honestly poured salt in the wound, Dede & Cole just cannot handle starting roles. Imagine trying to race in an old Nissan Sentra and then you lose a tire.

THE BOTTOM LINE - So YES I want to replace Bortles. YES we barely have a WR3 much less a 2 or 1. However, our biggest problem and the reason we aren't winning despite those things like last year, is DEPTH. Bortles is bad already but everyone who is supposed to help hide that fact is injured.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------

BONUS ROUND: Fire Nathaniel Hackett. His running playbook is nice paired with Marrone's blocking schemes, but he oversimplifies the passing game, I figured it out, that's why I hate him. He either wants you to throw drags & screens and flats all day, or he wants you to throw the most obvious telegraphed deep routes. There is no nuance to it. Here's Hackett:

Leading in the game - Run on every first down and every third and short. Every other situation: throw a drag. then fake a drag but throw to the RB on the other side. Then fake both and throw a screen to the original side. Then fake a screen and run with Bortles. Then read option and pretend to run with Bortles but run empty backside with Yeldon. Then play action, but throw a drag. Then play action, show a drag, but instead of Moncrief's 6th easy catch, throw deep this time.

he basically uses a bunch of dumb sideways decoy plays to set up one good playcall - it's bullshit and it's gimmicky and it's easy to predict. He'll use slight variations of the same package / route combinations like 12 different times in a game. I can't stress enough that this only works when you've got Fournette dominating on first down and converting all our short yardage 3rd downs. It is very easy to read what Hackett is trying to do with the passing game when you don't have to play the run first.

Now here's him losing in the game - Totally stop running even though it's the only thing I'm good at. Fuck my dink and dunk script, it's gonna take 3 quarters to finally set up that deep bomb because I literally move my queen 12 times on the chessboard just to take a pawn. So let's just "adapt" (see: blindly improvise) and call that play action deep bomb now when we've done nothing to fool the defense, so Bortles can throw a pick into double coverage. Oh shit, we missed / got sacked. Now it's time to run and keep the defense honest... on 2nd & fuckin 16. Woops, 3rd and long again, uhhh quick find another obvious deep bomb play so we can go 3 and out.

He just totally forgets how to manage down & distance without a runningback who can do all that for him, and it is infuriating. It's not that hard, just be less obvious on first down!!!

I feel like if you watch 3 weeks of Jaguars football you'll see our entire playbook. It's starting to get pathetic, and his game management is HORRIBLE - the second we don't have the momentum firmly in our hands we will never get it back. The second the defense isn't watching Fournette, they are looking for fakes and ready to blow them up every time we run Moncrief on a decoy drag route because that's all we fucking do. He can't change his script to the situation at all, he just expects pro defensive coordinators to just play dumb all day, and get dink and dunked and fooled by the same cheap tricks out of the same formation.

Sorry guys. Jags lost just got outscored 90-28 in 3 games (57-0 in 3 first halves) after being a consensus top 5 team last year. I had to get all my frustration out on this page. You knew this was coming.

Percy actually hit me with a stat the other day that said the Jags are bottom five in "unique plays". Also says that's why the Eagles were so dominant last year, they had the highest percentage of unique plays in quite some time

    The rivalry is back on

I don’t believe in a system where Darius Leonard is not #1 (and is behind a dude who hasn’t played in a month)

Leonard’s average per game stats look like Bentley’s career production.
