The world is so shitty right now, I’m not going to be cynical about a few more people liking my favorite band.

To be fair there is a great deal of unapologetic fanboyism as well. There are always going to be dissenters.

Well as someone just so graciously pointed out people probably think the reasons I love them are total bullshit. The world keeps on spinning

I listened to the S/T when it was on the AP EOTY list and thought “not a fan of this pop garbage”. It took like 10 listens of ILIWYS before it clicked.

Happy to say I’m not the same idiot boy I was 5 years ago!

You like what you like and it shouldn't mater what your reasons are for loving them.

life gets better when you don’t care about other people’s opinions about subjective matters. Didn’t mean for it to come off like we have a reason to snobby jerks to others!

My SO will stand by absolutely hating Self-Titled but when ILIWYS came out she admitted listening to it a few times. These new songs have been non-stop (constant play) and I'm sure that she will listen more and more but when Chocolate was played here constantlyyyyy it was fucking grinding.

I never heard of this band before stumbling across the thread for self-titled on AP. It came out a couple months after I graduated high school, I was feeling super lost but also ambitious as fuck at the same time and I downloaded it on a whim not really knowing anything about the band. Fell in love with it instantly, and now I consider this band to be my favorite currently making music. Found out about a lot of music thanks to AP/Chorus, honestly. Thanks guys!!!

I've had trouble getting into this band. I like a bunch of their songs, but I've struggled to get into the full albums, and I also haven't loved their live show, but I want it all to click for me and I'm hoping this album does it.

also i worked really hard to get this band taken seriously and was mostly ridiculed and ignored at the time, i would personally prefer not to be told how to feel about this

I believe it was you who directed me towards the philosophical leanings of the band, and they definitely were a little behind on the post-modern irony of the music they were making, and definitely used that in the marketing of ILIWYS and a little bit of S/T.

I forget what specifically you said, but the new philosophical honesty surrounding the narrative of the music this time (intellectual and emotional) is actually ahead of the cultural curve, and is refreshing and more approachable to newer listeners of the band, or past doubters.

also the music is dope af

Some of my friends make fun of me for being into this band but even if they do, they always end it with "...yeah the music is good but whatever" and then I just scoff into eternity and wonder how long it takes to make new friends

I see both angles here. I mean, I listened to the self-titled a couple times when it came out bc I really liked Sex and at the time the sound of the album overall wasn’t what I expecting and I kinda let them fall by the wayside a couple years. Then with ILIWYS, I became a full blown stan and ever since then I don’t think I’ve gone a full month without listening to them. When I revisited the self-titled after falling for ILIWYS, it was like listening to a completely different record. So sometimes it just takes time, maybe there will be people that “get it” this cycle and retroactively fall for their previous material too.

buuuuuuuut, in some circles/by some people, I think that the band has been taken less seriously because of bullshit superficial reasons... some of which I do believe are somewhat rooted in misogyny. That’s the stuff that frustrates me, and sometimes it’s an abstraction, but I can just feel it when it’s there. I’ve definitely gotten eyerolls and dismissive remarks when I’ve talked about this band, and especially when I tell people they’re my favorite band.

idk. I’m just rambling at this point but I feel like I can sense the difference, and I have way more time and patience for the ones who fall into the former than the latter. I’m here for saying “I told you so” to anyone who ever acted dismissively towards me for loving them, should they happen to hop on board if this cycle grants them critical acclaim.
