The beginning of The Hype's chorus melody is vaguely similar to Wonderwall and it's all I hear.

I literally had the same exact thought. You can almost fit the whole Wonderwall chorus in perfectly.

What gave them the right to write a song as good as Chlorine?

So this is growing on me quite a bit. Never been a fan but I’m starting to get this.

Chlorine might be my favorite on this album. That last minute or so is so goddamn good.

I’m really excited to hear how these new tracks sound live.

I honestly came into this album thinking I had lost interest in this band but I am so far back on the hype wagon now.

The last minute of Chlorine was the moment in the record where I relaxed. I just knew everything after that was going to be excellent.

Like, seriously. Cut My Lip was easily my least favorite on my first listen and I find myself singing it the most now. This album just gets more and more rewarding the more I listen.

  10. 3 songs in far and this is already better than their previous four albums combined. Huge Mutemath, Massive Attack and Alt-J vibes so far. I can't believe I'm listening to the same band.

  11. The second half is weaker and overall the album needed trimming, but I'm still pleasantly surprised.

As someone who's always found them to be kind of cringey would this album change my mind on them?

I’ve also found them kind of cringey, and even the first couple listens of this didn’t really change my mind.

But I’ve spent some time with it and it’s really clicking for me.

Went back through their entire discography expecting it to cement Trench as my favorite but man Vessel is so darn good.

I got into these guys with Blurryface (although Vessel ended up being my favorite album by them) and honestly I'm a bit confused by this LP.

I loved the layered and almost sterile sound of Vessel, where they made very little happening musically sound like huge soundscapes and a lot of attention to detail. My problem with Blurryface was the weakness of some tracks (WDBWOTV, Fairly Local and even Lane Boy to an extent) as some songs felt half-baked as if there were just missing instruments or something, but I loved the variation of style throughout the album.

This album is different. Some songs are amazing (Morph, My Blood, The Hype, Bandito, Leave The City) but I feel like a lot of the variation was lost. I don't know, I feel a lot of bands lose their ability to vary their songwriting after a few albums, but I don't that's the worst problem. I think there are just some legitimately uninspired-sounding songs here. (Levitate, Chlorine, even Jumpsuit got repetetive after a few listens).

I like the lyrics, but I'm worried they might have lost their spark. But I'll have to take the time to listen to this this thing through to fully have my thoughts figured out, but honestly it's probably tied with Blurryface right now for my least favorite studio release from them.

Never cared for this band at all but I'm listening to this album for the first time and holy shit the first 4 tracks are great.

Morph has passed Heathens on the Spotify Popular songs. I think that’s the first Trench song to do that, unless Jumpsuit did when it was first released. Is it even officially a single yet? The song is gonna be huge.

Not arguing it won't be huge, but I suspect part of why it is doing so well is that it is the first "new" song on the album (with Jumpsuit and Levitate being released a singles beforehand) so people are starting their listens with it. I know I've done that a bunch.

BBC radio session playing Neon Gravestones, In my Blood and a cover of 9 Crimes (Damien Rice).

Great performances. Love 9 Crimes. Nearly as good as the Brian Fallon version.

Jumpsuit nominated for Best Rock Song

Trench was released following the Grammy deadlines so album wouldn't be eligible until next year (although by that time it'll be distant memory for Grammy voters)

Stressed Out won a Grammy in February 2017 yet Blurryface was released in May 2015. I don’t think it’ll be a problem with the voters. The record labels are the ones that push things for nomination considerations.

Stressed out had a weird trajectory...it was released as a promotional single in April of 2015 but not 'issued' to Top 40 and released again as an official 4th single until November of 2015 - which falls into the Grammy timeline of October 1, 2015 to September 30, 2016 for the 2017 Grammys.

Also, although Blurryface did well on the Billboard charts in 2015, they didn't become global superstars until well after the release and 2016 was a huge year for them. I feel like they snuck up on a lot of Grammy voters because to them, they kind of came out of nowhere and blew up in 16.
