We reach for the longest shadow

Mothers of Men and The Hard Sell are jams, I don’t think they get the love they deserve.

Has anyone asked the band if the verse riff in Dark Side of Me sounding like Backend of Forever is an accident or on purpose?

An inconsequential shift as the continents drift.

this is a cool idea but I just can't imagine splitting up the Number City -> Gravity -> Away We Go trilogy for example (not just for how it breaks up the story flow)

fwiw here's how I usually play Descension cos I dislike about half the released album

    Pretelethal
    Sentry the Defiant
    Random Reality Shifts
    Number City
    Gravity's Union
    Away We Go
    Iron Fist (the acoustic/demo ver)
    Carol Ann
    2's My Favorite 1 (the piano/demo ver)

Yeah, there’s definitely some disjoint when it comes to story, and the segues obviously don’t line up.

I stopped being a heavy Coheed fan and have only been a very casual Coheed fan since around the time Year of the Black Rainbow came out(I've only listened to that album and onward a few times each), except for SSTB, and the few bangers on Color of the Sun, but holy shit this album is so good. I've listened to it four or five times this weekend, and honestly I think I can already say this is my favorite album of theirs and an AOTY candidate for me. I personally wrote them off a bit after not liking Afterman, but goddamn this record is so good

Wild to like this and not Afterman, I feel like they are the most similar.

This record has *way* more for the old school Coheed fan that lost interest after GA1 than Afterman, IMO

Hm, okay, I’ll have to take your word for it since I’ve been following them the whole time.

this album is clearly the closest to NWFT in style, it’s pretty uncanny

Well I think I gotta make room for Evagria in my top 5. My goodness, what a song. Also, Number City is so cool because of how different it is for them. I remember not having a clue what was going on the first time I listened to it, which is one of the highest compliments I can give a song.

domino is so good because it’s a long song with the best fucking pay off ever. like when you get to the last chorus it feels just ridiculously rewarding

yeah for The Gutter being their best song since domino

I’ve figured it out. “Toys” is basically a Fang Island song which is why I love it so much.

The solo in Deafheaven's Honeycomb reminded me of Fang Island recently...miss that band!

For the last week I kept falling asleep in bed trying to listen to this all the way through, which breaks my Coheed-lovin' heart. Now that I have given it several conscious listens: I think this is the most vocal-led album they've ever released. Obviously each chorus is massive hook on top of massive hook, but I feel like the vocals never let up and let the music do the talking, except maybe "The Dark Sentencer". I think that's what makes this album sound so bloated and monotonous on first few listens. You gotta work to pick out what's going on behind the vocals, however that does make for very rewarding repeat listens.

Early favs: Love Protocol, Toys, The Gutter, Dark Sentencer.

Of sugar and ice I am made

It really is an album which rewards repeated listens. I'm at a point where I get bummed every time it ends because I want more songs, even though they've given us 14 (and an intro) already! I'm still sad I opted out of buying the box set until it was too late, but so it goes.

I tossed this on today and laid down and accidentally went through it three times in a row while drifting in and out of a nap. It was actually a super serene experience

Idk man that length is streching the time for a nap

I’ve worked the last seven days straight and I’ve got another six ahead of me I’m exhausted and neeeded a big one before my closing shift tonight lol, I slept probably a total of 45 minutes over a few hours going in and out of sleep

I've had the ending of "Black Sunday" stuck in my head all day. This band really knows how to end songs.

Yeah the bridge of It Walks Among Us really stuck out to me today.

I wasn't big on True Ugly at first. The chorus just kinda came outta nowhere and felt forced (but lots of Coheed hooks come out of nowhere). I've come around to it because the bridge to that song is soooo good.

    True Ugly bridge is GOAT

Even the chorus is my jam big time. I so easily prefer its subtle catchiness to something like the "huge" Pavilion or even Protocol choruses.
