the last few episodes leading up to the Finale were great, AARM is one of the best episodes of the show I think.

it's been said before but I actually really like most of season 9, I think they found a way to make it funny and seem fresh again without Michael, something that season 8 flopped completely on.

Idk, I've rewatched The Office at least 7 or 8 times and I've never seen anything or heard any lines that seemed over the top or offensive, besides maybe michaels Ping impersonations lol

of course there's the sexist Todd Packer moments but those scenes are written in a way where the majority of on screen characters voice their disdain for him.

I've seen/heard more questionable sexist/homophobic lines in early seasons of Friends than probably any other show of this kind. I think that has even been discussed in the Friends thread.

I think the Office was always written in such a way that, when something on screen is presented that might be taken as sexist, offensive, racist, etc., it's always met with grief and horror from the actual characters, meaning to imply that we should know that it's wrong, offensive, and rude. Even in the Ping scene in Chilis (Dundies Episode), theres a shot of an asian lady glaringg at michael, implying that shes offended and that this behavior isn't acceptable. I think the writing does a good job of using their characters dialogue and body language to let the viewer know that they know it's not being written with offense intended.

    I agree with that.

Anything said that would be considered ignorant and offensive as a normal person was done in a way to kind of say "See? Idiots say racist (or whatever) stupid shit like this."

And even if one of the good characters slip up and do or say something shitty, it's almost always met with an apology or everyone calling them out.

As a weird example, Michael using decade old punch lines or jokes aren't said to make you laugh at the joke in a way of like, "Man, that is so funny!!!" They were used to make you think, "Man, I know an asshole just like that," and you laugh at them.

Yea, they never glorified offensive humor. One of the first episodes, Michael is slapped by Kelly because of his Indian "impression".

But also watching a show where a boss outs his gay employee and says the n word in front of a black employee isn't something I'd necessarily want to watch now I get what he's saying

I don't think any of it is mean spirited though, either from the writers or from Michaels' perspective either.

Obviously both would be wrong to do in real life though.

I don't know, maybe this is something that I just can't personally identify with.

i started watching this a couple months ago and am on season 5 now. i was definitely repeatedly taken aback by some of the stuff michael did/said. it made me realize that a) the show was older than i thought it was, b) it's shocking how many one-liners I've heard in life are derived from just one utterance on the show, and c) def wouldn't fly today.

IASIP and South Park are wildly popular, so The Office would definitely still fly now.

But the show clearly portrays him as in the wrong. The whole point of the 'Gay Witch Hunt' episode is to watch Michael, essentially a child in an adult's body, try his best to be a mature, responsible boss, and completely failing. It's not a guide... 'How To Run A Workplace'.

One of the most underrated jokes on this show is Michael bringing two suitcases for souvenirs to Winnipeg. It never really stood out to me before but it’s cracking me up right now. “A concierge is the Winnipeg equivalent of a geisha.”

The Cathy stuff, Jim/Pam/camera guy, Nellie/Andy; all that stuff makes 8 and 9 SO hard for me to watch. I'm sure I will go back at some point but ugh.

Stayed home sick this morning and watched season 6 episodes, got a good chuckle out of...

Michael: I have been saying the word 'manager' a lot, so whenever Jo thinks 'manager', she thinks of me. Camel cigarettes did the same with Joe Camel by making him look like a penis. I can't even go near a cigarette now without thinking of a penis. And vice versa.

i love coming across moments in episodes that i never really paid attention to or thought were funny,

watching the episode where michael burns his foot in the foreman grill and dwight gets the concussion and he's just sitting at his computer typing DWIGHT DWIGHT DWIGHT DWIGHT DWIGHT DWIGHT DWIGHT DWIGHT just had me rollllingg lol
