one of the reasons I've always respected this band a lot - it's not even clear lyrically if it's a reference to suicide or if the gun is pointed at somebody else, but they still put the suicide hotline number in the lyrics booklet just in case, and this was a couple of years before that even became common or expected of bands. True class

Hmm I remember it saying "these lyrics are part of a story and should not be taken literally," right after the lyrics to the song, but I don't remember the suicide hotline number.

No Coheed songs, or even really any song bar a few exceptions, have ever floored me instantly like Domino the Destitute did, like that song is responsible for me listening to so much of my favourite music now, really got me into Coheed beyond the hits too.

That song was the, “Coheed’s back” after the YOTBR detour. The Dark Sentencer acted mhch the same way, letting you know the TCBTS era was over and sci-fi coheed was back.

It's not a sexy pick but the guitar solo through the end of Willing Well I is my favorite stretch of music in their catalog

Love Protocol through It Walks Among Us is an incredibly solid run of songs.

i think The Willing Well III: Apollo II: The Telling Truth has my favorite part of any Coheed song, which is basically the second it reprises the normal Apollo I: The Writing Writer chorus "goodnight, tonight im Burning Star IV" all the way until the end of the song. love the Blood Red Summer and Everything Evil callbacks and i just love that chorus so damn much. i couldnt even really explain WHY i love it so much but it just sounds so triumphant and badass and im a sucker for Claudios "woah oh oh"s

it's an awful review and I'm sorry, I can't think of a way to approach this album with my "serious music reviewer" hat on that isn't just saying "this song is 5 minutes and it's extremely good and has a great chorus, this song that follows it is also 5 minutes and it's extremely good and has a great chorus" and so on

I liked it. Someone can definitely write a more serious review, but yeah, an album full of really good 5 minute songs is a great summation of this album.

I just can't get into this record. For me the consistency works to its detriment as everything really runs together. There aren't necessarily any "bad" tracks, but there also aren't really any tracks that immediately grabbed me, unlike pretty much all of their prior albums. I'm bummed out, especially because I know that at this point in a band's career we should just be grateful they're still active. To that end, I'm glad that so many people are enjoying this because it's more likely they'll keep releasing stuff.

The "too consistent" criticism is strange to me when the same could be said of SSTB and IKS, two of their top three records. "A lot of great 5-minute songs" wouldn't be far off the mark for either of those. This record is just a lot of somewhat less amazing 5-minute songs, haha.

IMO, Afterman is more the anomaly in their career with its extreme diversity. GA1 is maybe a little more diverse than this, but not by a ton.
