Okay. Starting my second listen with good headphones.

But probably my 5th time through overall today.

I had the same idea. That “love” could be a placeholder for a time when he had faith, innocence, compassion for the world, etc. Like something positive that was once in him has passed on. That’s how I interpreted it. AND IT KILLS ME. Haha.

I cannot for the life of me shake this sense of existential dread and simultaneous ethereal feeling that this record gives me.

Been feeling it all day long.

Totally off thread topic, but man, this reminded me of a dream I had a few months ago:

I was driving around town in an area where I used to live in real life and decided to drive by my old apartment. The complex brought back great memories and a feeling of nostalgia, so I decided that I should move back into that apartment. Time jumps forward a bit and I'm totally moved in and settled, all my stuff is unpacked and I'm there cooking dinner and listening to an album on my record player and kept thinking to myself, "I'm so glad that I moved back here, I missed this place."

After I woke up, I kept thinking about that apartment layout and how it was perfect for how I love smaller cozy places, that I preferred the older retro style everything was designed in and I actually started thinking maybe it was some kind of sign that I should legit move back there for real at the end of my lease.

A good five or ten minutes went by and I slowly started realizing that that apartment never existed in real life and that I don't really know how or where those "memories" came from and that the sense of nostalgia was totally manufactured.

I told my good friend about it later that day and she interpreted it as me aching to want to go back to a happier and more content part of my life and the fact that it existed only in my dreams and not in my actual memory and reality, that it probably meant that I've never been happy in my past.

That hit me like a ton of bricks. I could have been knocked over by a feather.

Maybe TMI for this thread, but just wanted to share how that lyric and subsequent posts on here reminded me of it.

Dang. That's some crazy stuff to work through while you're supposedly "resting". Kind of jealous since I either don't remember my dreams or don't have them anymore.

I have mild sleep apnea, which I believe leads to either more vivid dreams or since you’re not in REM as much as a normal person, you’re constantly in flux between that and very light sleeping, so all the dreams are fresh in my mind each morning. I have about 275 or so written in my dream journal over the last couple years.

This reminds me of that story on reddit a few years ago, about the guy living an entire life in what was essentially a dream. He became fixated on a lamp in this dream and slowly began to unravel the reality that it wasn’t his reality.

Real or not, it was really well written.

I think the thing that stands out to me the most about this album is how...not weird it is, if that makes sense, at least for a mwy record. Almost left me kinda disappointed at first but I know when earlier records came out I wanted them to be more accessible.

Disregarding Winter Solstice (which is basically a killer mwY pop track) I think is plenty weird. The vocal mix is low intentionally in some spots to illustrate a point, the vocals on Michael are whispered shimmery waves that are more like an instrument than a vocal, and there's a song about cats fighting or something. Plus, teletuby references.

It may just be that you are used to many of their unique points of style after following them for so long.

Yeah. I found this to be really weird.

More obscure than anything else in their discography. I’ve never been so perplexed by an album on first listen. I mean this in the best way possible.

Idk, the guitars in particular just generally sound a lot more straightforward and there’s less to get “used to,” so to speak. I mean don’t get me wrong I enjoy it a lot, it just stood out to me. Kinda surprised someone hadn’t mentioned it before, I think it’s a very stark change.

As a casual fan of this band (basically, I really love a few of their songs, but there’s never been a full album that’s completely clicked with me), this is immediately the most a full album of theirs has pulled me in. I’m so excited to listen again and dive into the lyrics.

This is scary good. I couldn’t have imagined what this was going to sound like after hearing Julia. Absolutely stoked to hear something this unique! The e.p. was an absolute perfect starter to the LP. How great is everyone on this!! Thankful for mwY and Will Yip! Wow
