I can't make a decision based on information I don't have. It's that simple. Trusting survivors of abuse does not translate to believe everything you read on the internet. Specifically when it's not from a survivor.

If there are other victims and they dont want their experience to be public and that's what all this scene peeps are talking about then it seems to me they are going against the other potential survivors wishes. Right? Like, they are putting this out into the public sphere by pulling this, "I know something you don't." stuff. That's not your story to tell.

 

I get the feeling that the vague angry tweets are coming from a stressful week. I think the Kavanaugh bullshit has people on edge and the timing of this situation makes it worse. Not saying I think they’re handling it the right way, I can just see why they might be acting the way they are. It’s a real shitty time for everyone.

I’m gonna echo what @OhTheWater said a few days ago, I just feel like if I go right back to listening to them I didn’t care enough about the situation in the first place. I’m DEFINITELY not saying anyone who’s listening doesn’t care. I’m just in a place where I’m trying to figure out where to draw my own lines, and when I turned on Cardinal for the first time in a while I felt guilty and gross. Again, definitely not trying to imply anyone listening doesn’t care, I hope this doesn’t come off that way, I’m just having a tough time trying to figure out this stuff myself and I’m still not sure how to feel.

 

Maybe I’m being too optimistic, but I would say the majority of these people know this information and because of it can’t understand why anyone would want to go back to supporting the band. They’re angry and frustrated because they want to say “here’s why I feel this way” without it falling back on the person

Frankly, trying to steer people away from someone who’s done something I find objectionable without harm falling back on the person that’s been hurt is a situation I’ve found myself in way too often, and it fucking sucks to try and navigate these spaces by saying /just enough/

 

How can they not understand that not everyone has the same information they do though? So they should be able to understand why people would go back to listening to the band

 

comments on bandcamp are pretty gross. a lot of “so glad they’re back :).” the way people by and large put having songs they’ll listen to five times in a month and then forget about over literal life stakes always baffles me.

 

Even when I try to see it from the perspective of someone who doesn’t have the same information, I’m still going to be connecting certain dots that other people aren’t. I can’t just purge that entirely out of my head. So the best I can do is things like “why didn’t you see through where the article said this”

 

This is something that’s been bothering me that I don’t know how to reckon with, but ultimately I’m not sure is Evan’s responsibility. When he says “we don’t want these fans” I believe him, but he has to know he can’t put that genie back in the bottle either. He’s appealing right to those fans with the album. If you search twitter for Pinegrove there are plenty of people who’s only takeaway from the article is “new album!” Again, I don’t really know what he can do about it, but it’s something I’ve been hung up on

 

it happened a lot with brand new too. it’s nothing new and will continue long past this album cycle unfortunately

 

Fair, but Brand New didn’t put out an album and play shows knowing those people spend money on them

 

i wasn’t speaking on the process the artists took in releasing the music or retreating from public, i was speaking on the reactions of fans to the music put out and its relation to the retreat

 

There is nothing comparable between this and that situation

 

Why aren't people allowed to be glad about one of their favorite bands being back? Do they have to write a few paragraphs airing their grievances about the situation before they're allowed to enjoy the music? I guess it just seems like an assumption that they don't care at all about someone's "life stake"


I certainly think the people saying explicitly "I don't give a shit about what you may have done, as long as you keep making music" is wrong. But lumping any and all people happy to have them back is a bit much imo

To assume that anybody who is glad to have new music from one of their favorite bands hasn't thoughtfully considered the situation and reached their own conclusions from what has been made available is pretty fucked up imo

 

does anyone else feel like this is so much harder not knowing what Evan actually did? between the statement last year, the article, and scene people dropping hints, I truly have no ide what he did. when we know what the person did, like in the case of brand new, it’s easier to draw that line and cut that person out. all we know is what he did was sexual coercion and it was bad, beyond that I don’t really have a sense of what went down. that’s whats making this so hard for me to really know how to proceed. if he did something that ultimately doesn’t deserve redemption then obviously they shouldn’t come back, but if not then idk. for those of us not in the know I feel like this is what makes it hard to gauge where to go from here. it does for me anyway

 

and I’m not saying we deserve to know or have any right to know. it’s just adds to the confusion

 

Yeah, it’s what makes this extremely complicated in my opinion

 

@OhTheWater I’ve seen the word “caution” thrown around a lot in your posts in here. I’m curious as to what being cautious in a situation like this looks like to you? If it makes it easier to apply to situation that’s not so blurry at this very moment, I saw you bring it up in reference to CK as well. What type of caution would have helped in that situation?

 

and the fact that p4k is making it sound like there is one victim when there are rumors swirling about multiple people.

I think the only person who implied there might be multiple people was user Leerkat, who later clarified that what they meant was they didn’t want to risk giving Evan back a platform in case there was someone’s else

As far as I know, most people you see talking about what they know on twitter are referring to the single anonymous person

 

Glad I’m not the only one. I’m definitely not one of the people super stoked on a new album and eager to listen. But I am trying to be open to forgiveness. Your posts and Spo’s posts have definitely made me think twice about what’s going on. Ultimately I just don’t know what to do from here and don’t want to see things get ugly the way I have at times. But I get it, emotions are high and the situation is messy. I want to believe we’re all on the same team here
