also i gotta be honest given the content of the piece and evan's original statement i would've donated the album proceeds to charities that support survivors

money where your mouth is imo

I know you saw my post yesterday but yeah agreed 100%. I’m just not in a place right now where I want to hear anything about this situation and that’s making it way harder.

i do wonder how far in advance the article was planned. i dont really know how the ins and outs of music journalism work. i know she began work last year but when did she pick it back up and decide it was going to be run on pitchfork? did she decide when to run it or did pitchfork as a whole? my hate for p4k as a company is well documented but i respect some of their writers, including jenn, a lot. so i wouldnt be surprised if it was pitchfork pushing to get the article out at a certain time or whatever. at the same time, sexual assault is always in the news these days, would there have ever been an ideal time to release it in this climate?

Yes sexual assault is always in the news these days, but this is a particularly important sexual assault case that affects the future of our country. It’s a lot and it’s been really disheartening to follow how little the people in charge seem to care about this stuff. Not to call the Pinegrove situation “minor”, but it’s just hard to read about or focus on what the “right” thing to do in this situation is when ultimately this is just a band that matters very little right now

i totally get the really bad timing with the kavanaugh hearings. im just wondering ultimately who it falls down on that this came out when it did. the band? jenn? pitchfork? thats mostly what im wondering. because i agree someone deserves blame for that. but i dont want to aim it at jenn or the band if pitchfork made the final decision. i dont wanna get mad at jenn if it was the band who decided the timing. you know?

I mean, the album was shelved for six months. They clearly waited out of respect and releasing it finally around the time of the profile makes the most sense honestly, waiting a couple months later would have been way more contentious for reasons stated in the thread prior (a more traditional press cycle etc)

Deeply empathetic towards anyone who feels triggered by the scenario given the current political climate, especially this week. I can't speak for that, but I will say in being completely bombarded with a lack of responsibility regarding similar matters I find it pretty hopeful to see someone at least attempt to atone. I also need to remember it's important to recognize others have the right to deem those attempts unsatisfactory

When I read the article yesterday, I had some mixed feelings, and it's really only gotten murkier. I feel some relief that the situation seems to be resolved for those involved. The abuse that occurred doesn't seem to have been malicious, although clearly it was harmful. I'm glad the victim seems to be at peace with everything, that the band honored her wishes, and that Evan sought help during the last 10 months.

Still, I'm apprehensive about the band's comeback. I haven't listened to them since the day he put out that statement. I even got mad at myself on occasions where I found myself unintentionally singing/humming Old Friends or Angelina. Reading this article, part of me felt excitement to listen to Cardinal again... but still I'm hesitant to. I really don't know how I feel about listening to a new album at this point. I'm definitely not ready to go support them on tour or wear their merch again.

Not that my feelings on any of this matter, or whether it's ok to listen to the music should be the central question. Mostly I'm glad the wishes of the victim were honored (seemingly, as others have pointed out this is still pretty one-sided because of their anonymity) and that Evan, given the information we have, seems to be in a better place and doesn't seem to be a threat to anyone.

Also I really hate referring to a person as "the victim". Bleh.

those are definitely words I’ve seen people say, not in this thread explicitly but it is a sentiment that exists

that’s the feeling I get as well which is why I’m hesitant to get mad at any other parties involved because of the timing

Yeah, sorry, I tried to make it clear I wasn't calling you out for anything, I just wanted to correct the record. And also illustrate that I was in no way "over-simplifying" anything that was said. It really was that reductive and simple.
