So that tweet is implying that having the proceeds go to a charity is disingenuous, and used to guilt you into buying the record?

That's more believable to the person tweeting than someone making a concerted effort to do better? lol

 

less a problem with you personally, more of a natural reaction I see too much, and your post just made me think of it.

It’s weird how even the most forward thinking and progressive examples of this kind of situation still feel really toxic and poorly thought out. Accountability is so poorly understood at this moment in time.

 

It's been mentioned but should be reiterated: only proceeds from the Bandcamp sales are going to charity.

I guess I just don't get what you guys want who seem to want this guy dragged out behind the woodshed and shot. I don't really listen to this band so I'm not here to fanboy, just put my $.02 in. He was accused of something, he addressed it, he got help, and more importantly the victim approved of the steps he's taken forward and agreed it's okay to release an album. If you're going to talk about believing all victims then you have to be willing to listen to a victim in an instance like this too.

It's probably going to be a long road ahead for Evan and the victims as well. But people can change. Good people do shitty things. Maybe he's just a shitty person, but it's not out of the question to think that he's a good person who did some shitty things and is turning his life around. It can happen, you guys do know that right? The victim approves, good enough for me.

That said, I'll probably never listen to the album because these guys do nothing for me haha.

 

I have a feeling its going to be released on bandcamp for pay what you want.. it won't hit streaming until next year with this new label/release

 

I'd actually be a bit bummed if this is digital only, would love to own it on vinyl.

 

I'm just having such a hard time with the entire situation. I hate immediately letting someone off the hook for this sort of thing and Evan really still comes across as a pretty weird dude, but by all accounts it seems that the initial victim was okay with this piece being written/Pinegrove getting back into music. Which makes all of the other posts in here about people knowing more about the situation and other bands vehemently disagreeing with them getting back into the scene so much more confusing. Are the situations that people "know more about" or w/e the same situation? Are there other cases of him being abusive that just aren't on the record/the victim doesn't want to speak out about? In my mind, if the victim is okay and the abuser took time to adequately reflect and make changes in their life and both parties come to a mutual agreement, I don't know why they wouldn't be allowed back in the scene.

In terms of the article, I do really find it odd that the album is dropping so quickly and this serves as an announcement in addition to a piece about the entire series of events. I wish that this could have come out on its own and they allowed people to respond and think about it and digest the situation before immediately putting out a record, that's just weird to me. I'm definitely not going to demean the author as being a "fangirl" or w/e because that's fucked up and I also didn't read it as such.

 

I understand this. I kind of wonder if they just want to get the album out there and get to work on the next era of the band. Instead of scrapping the album, they are releasing it for charity.

 

Here's the thing, if they throw it just on bandcamp and with all the proceeds going to charity, i mean... I think that is absolutely fine. They arn't forcing anyone to purchase the album, if you need more time... take it. The real interesting thing for me is this other record in January. that seems like more of the sell in the end. What new label will it be on? Who took a shot on these guys and trusts them not to mess up? We will see, time will tell.

Are they still listed on Dead Oceans website? They might still release their stuff, and were working with them in some capacity already.

Do bands make any money from streaming on band camp? Not buying, just streaming. Not that I’m against buying it and supporting the charities, I’m just wondering if there’s a way to stream without paying anything. I don’t trust that the streaming numbers from Apple Music or Spotify will count toward those charities, and I don’t necessarily want to pay for the album anyway.

 

some you can, some you have to purchase. If it is up on Apple Music or Spotify, I am going to assume the money they get from that will not go to charity, along with any physical versions that eventually come out.

exactly without vinyl, it would be hard for them to recoup their costs for making the album.. however, the album was probably made on an advance from Run For Cover.. if the two partys split mutally without a financial agreement, then the band could make pure profit all of it.. there is no way to know these things without copies of their contracts tho lol

 

I wonder if adding that an album was coming out on Friday was pitchforks decision and not the bands.. you never know.. if it was really supposed to show up out of nowhere.

 

But as you can see from Command + S, they self recorded everything. I really don't know how much upfront costs they needed to make it.

EDIT: and this makes sense to me as far as RFC is concerned as well. Maybe why they are okay mutually splitting since they didn't have much investment in it anyway.

 

yea, I mean mixing and mastering can still be 5-6k or more depending on who they used if they had it mixed elsewhere , but i guess for a label like that, that really isn't that much.

 

Ugh, the beginning of this thread is hard to read. So much hopeful optimism.
