Hold up a light, steady a bright
Out like a knife through the cold and dark
These eager flames can't be contained
Cities are claimed by the smallest spark

    It's raining and I know we're tired
But try to raise your lamps a little higher up

    Hold up a light
    Hold up a light
    Hold up a light
    till the morning comes
    Hold up a light
    Hold up a light
    Hold up a light
    till the world is won

Soaking and scared - worse for the wear
But still we dare for the light of the day
Darkness above but we're dreaming of the
New day when love burns this night away

    It's raining and I know we're tired
But try to raise your lamps a little higher up

    Hold up a light
    Hold up a light
    Hold up a light

Three listens in, and I’m immensely satisfied.

Fucking Spotify....I’ve listened mutiple times already, and this morning it brings up the “hey Thrice has a new album out! Would you like to listen?” icon. Lol

Repetition is part of songwriting. Like it or not.

    Danger Days is so underrated...

At least be honest and quote the entire thing. That part is more of an extended outro and not the substance of the song. Which I'm sure you know. And still this part feels less repetitive than Hold Up A Light.

Dustin is not as poetic as he used to be, no matter how badly you want him to be. He's a lot more literal now, and that's okay too.

When I see someone disparaging Dustin's lyrics, 9 times out of 10 it's someone who opposes his point of view.

    I’m a big sports fan.

Analytics are interesting, but can sometimes get in the way of enjoying the sports. I’m not a musician though.

    I think if it as:

How does the music make you feel? (Like or dislike)
What does the music say? (Is it interesting/relatable)
What does the music mean? (Does it register or matter to the listener)

I find people can pick apart every note or every word, but if the band making it stands behind it, I can only like and support or dislike and move on.there are sometimes things I wish were a little different, but sometimes you got to except it.

(This is a response to Mike)

    I don’t think that’s the case here.

While I love the lyrics, they do have a bit more simplicity to them as far as Dustin’s lyrics usually go. Not that there aren’t brilliant moments, and not that I don’t enjoy the simplicity.

I mentioned Aaron Weiss to purposefully make a distinction that my lack of love for his newer lyrics isn’t just cause I don’t resonate. I found his older stuff legitimately more poetic. It’s still objectively good though. I won’t die on this hill. :)

Any of you major minor haters wanna sell me your vinyl for a decent price? Beggars and major minor cost way too much on discogs

I don’t hate m/m. I’d just give it a 7/10. Everything else from artist forward is at least a 9.

Some of the best songs of all time use repetition. It’s a good tool for creating ear worms. I think there’s about variation in the other songs that the occasional use of it doesnt bother me here.

M/M is still very solid album. I love Call It In The Air, one of the two songs that gets grilled on here most often. I love my M/M vinyl @teebs41 so I won't be off loading that. I believe its my only Thrice record that's pressed at 45rpm.

Yeah. I don’t spin the one very often for the sole reason that I find it tedious to switch the band on my turntable.

Call It In The Air gets grilled on here? It’s one of the only songs on M/M I really like

  24. Call It In The Air gets a divisive reaction? I always thought it was one of the most praised M/M songs. Probably the closest they had gotten to Vheissu at the time, those chord progressions are so eerie. The chorus does get on my nerves though, but it might be more due to the mix instead of Dustin's performance.

The "It's raining and I know we're tired" pre-chorus line of "Hold Up A Light" reminds me of Buzz Cut Season's melody (most notably the way Dustin covers it on his live covers record)
