It's just a self-referential way that stops him having to be human.

you know what i like about sincerity is scary?

this is a sound they've done before. its the same lane as "if i believe you." but what this song does is take that same genre blueprint and comes up with a completely different song with a completely different vibe. it shows that while they jump around genres a lot, they're more than capable of diving into those sounds in depth. that is to say, they arent one of those bands with a lot of styles thats pretty good at all of them but great at none of them. they're great at all of them.

My god even just the small intro to the song makes my heart melt

There’s a level of sincerity on these songs, possibly due to Mattys improved vocals and lyrics, that is really tapping into the idea of the band dropping their “ironic” schtick and writing for themselves. And the idea that modern technology allows for us to be everything all at once - ironic, sincere, loving, hateful - creates a distance between each other, but most importantly, ourselves.

Really loving the themes the band is approaching here

They can do any genre they want and it comes out great. Patiently waiting for The 1975 polka.

Am I just imagining that Matty referenced DFW in interviews? Because these lyrics are 100% based in his core philosophies

Didn't know about this. Definitely aspects of the new songs are rooted in this ideology. I'll probably be reading more about this. I want to try to write a review of this album when it comes out to flesh out ideas I have about the album, mostly for myself.

Definitely dive deeper into this. It can be pretty vindicating to realize how much irony and cynicism can be defense mechanisms, which is why this band cuts through so well; you lower your defenses and the brutal honesty is powerful

You have any recommendations? I haven’t read any DFW (and to be honest, don’t think I have the time/attention to read his gargantuan works lol)

I’m just finding it interesting that the progression of the bands ideology is directly correlating with my own observations as I get older.

Pick up Consider the Lobster. It’s a collection of essays and is more than worth your time. Also, read Good Old Neon, which is a short story and the .pdf can easily be found online.

Once you’re hooked, read Infinite Jest.

"some sket who wanted to bitch" - according to the internets.

I really like this song. It's honest, but (this is how I perceived it, I've no doubt some of you will disagree) I felt that the choir intentionally distracts you from Matty, which is kind of ironic in the sense that the song was about being open, ditching the irony and whatnot, yet his voice is almost hidden behind the choir at times. It's less human/personal in a sense, backed by a wall of voices that aren't his?

Probably reading too much into it. In fact I definitely am. Just how I feel about it. This is what happens when you listen to a song on repeat since its release.

Would love to know what he murmurs at the end.

I'm not sure you can read too much into their songs, they're definitely meant to be dissected like that. Good point, anyway, it's also probably a refence of some sort to the War song

It's mostly present in his longer novels, Pale King and Infinite Jest most clearly, but I wouldn't start with those unless you have the time/patience for those. I'd start with non-fiction like A Supposedly Fun thing or short stories like the aforementioned Good Old Neon, which contextualizes his work in an (unfortunately) appropriate way.

And as Jason pointed out, he was a bad dude. I don't want to put him on pedestal, but his writing is truly excellent and transformative.
