Goes without saying, but if TAITA left you hungering for some more experimentation then go check out Vheissu + The Alchemy Index.

If you want to hear the band at (arguably) their best (or at least most beloved by the band's hardcore fans), then check out The Illusion of Safety. Identity Crisis will feel very dated, but it still hits the spot every now and then.

    Cheers!

  2. I had never been a fan of The Illusion Of Safety but I've put it on just for curiosity recently, and was surprised to hear the similarities to Propagandhi and early Protest The Hero. Now I appreciate it a little bit more.

I still haven't been able to get into The Illusion of Safety as a whole yet. I usually find myself wanting to skip forward to Artist about halfway through Illusion.

  5. Dustin's vocals are really rough, which kept me away from it.

Illusion was my favorite Thrice album for the longest time. I still rank it ahead of TAITA, but I do think TAITA is a bit more cohesive/consistent/re-playable as an album.

Lol - Maybe I'm speaking for myself? I don't know. I find that TIOS has a special place for fans who've followed the band since Day 1. Or maybe the fanbase has grown so much in recent years that there really is no consensus anymore?

After listening to Palms a few times over the weekend, I ran through Thrice's discography in chronological order.

Nothing new to say about IC/TIOS/TAITA. Vheissu remains my favorite record by the band, but I gained a new appreciation for how awesome its b-side tracks are. And Beggars remains, to me, the band's best record in the second half of their discography (too early for me to rank Palms).

In my experience the fans who love, and pine for, Illusion are the ones who haven't really followed the band closely since (or at least since Artist) and just want to hear the songs they're nostalgic for. I would say that's the opposite of a hardcore fan.

There are a lot of longtime fans in this thread, myself included, and from what I can tell very few who would say Illusion is their best.

Honestly, I am pretty beyond the pining.

  11. I'm not sure I have even heard Identity Crisis. I honestly don't remember anything from it. I guess I should give it a chance then.

I think we're sort of speaking past each other?

I was specifically referring to fans (like myself) who've been with the band since 2001/2002 and enjoyed their changes/evolutions throughout the years. Probably a matter of semantics, but I meant to say TIOS was a big album in the band's discography for the longest time. It was their breakout album that got them huge exposure in the scene + record deal from Island. So yeah, I was more referring to the album's significance and not making a claim that it's clearly the best album by the band. Could've been clearer with the wording.

Illusion of Safety will always be my favorite Thrice record. It's just incredible start to finish. It's the album that came out when I started liking them so maybe that's why it's immortalized.

I remember seeing them play Phoenix ignition on their farewell tour and people were moshing during the intro. Horrible experience I would wish on no one

I've only listened to Identity Crisis maybe once. That album and Illusion I consider to be pretty much on the same level, with the latter merely having better production.

The evolution from Illusion to Artist and then again from Artist to Vheissu is pretty nuts.

.....you aren't suppose to mosh until after the intro when the song kicks in. That sounds terrible!

I love that song though and seeing it live a few times has been awesome.

I'm fully prepared to go back on this, but as far as first impressions, I liked TBEITBN way more than this one.

During my first listen, nothing blew me away like the encapsulation of Hurricane and Salt and Shadow on TBEITBN.

But as a whole, after several more spins, I see Palms as significantly more enjoyable. Only time will truly tell though.

I remember listening to Hurricane for the first time and having chills through the entire song. I'm not expecting anything on Palms to match that feeling, which is totally fine. TBE is a lightning-in-a-bottle of a record for me.

Yeah, I just put on Hurricane after listening to Palms, and nothing on Palms comes close to resonating with me like Hurricane does, but yeah, I'll definitely give it more time.

I haven’t heard anything beyond Only Us and The Grey and both of those I hadn’t listened to for over a week.

Revisited them today and boy do I love The Grey.
