FJM just gives me such a snobbish vibe, it's hard to listen to the music. I saw him at the subpop 30 year anniversary festival, and he just seems so full of himself that it was painful to watch.

So an indie John Mayer. Got it.

That's Father John Misty's entire gimmick. He's purposely making a mockery of many things at once. He's even funnier on stage, but even his recordings are genuinely hilarious and intriguing.

While other forums are directing all of their hate and angst at the festival? ChorusFM's Riot Fest thread focuses their negative energy on Father John Misty.

    Report that, Reddit!

But seriously. Whenever I hear Father John Misty, all I can think about is that one Katy Perry-sounding Offspring party song from a few years ago... It was "critiquing" pop-culture in a way that (had the band been 20 years younger) would have allowed it to be a Top 40 hit, and thus "ironic."

Shit like that just bugs me. "Let's mock this thing... By sounding and acting exactly like this thing!"

And that's the only time Father John Misty will ever be compared to the Offspring. Unless he learns how to fly a plane or develops his own brand of hot sauce that is now available in supermarkets across the country.

Well. Decided to do some light digging, and that article (shitty as it might be) seems to be making a bit of a wave on-line. I was secretly hoping this would happen... If the press picks it up and everything is okay (to some degree), that could force the festival to say something.

FWIW too, that Kot guy replied to some folks on Twitter basically saying that his tweet wasn't meant to sound ominous; just that there were no facts yet.

Also: There's now a Riot Fest Rumors twitter account (@fest_riot) that seems to be tracking everything.

Oh, and for anybody who might be going to the Jawbreaker show on November 4th at the Aragon? Smoking Popes are apparently the "special guests."

    I'm certainly going.

Just saw the Smoking Popes open for the Descendents at 350 Fest, and have seen them several times before (oddly enough, I was watching them in Brooklyn years ago when my friend shouted in my ear that Bin Laden had been killed. Which had to be the last expected thing for someone to shout in my ear while at a Smoking Popes show).

They always put on a fun show, and Josh Carterer is one of the absolute nicest people I've ever met.

    Ah. Yeah.

Well, that's awesome! I've never managed to see them live which... Is super unfortunate as I'm a big a fan. Something comes up literally every time they roll through town, and they seem to be at Riot Fest the years I don't attend.

very unrelated other than the mistaken mention, but I gotta say, if there's a band that should be actively trying to get into riot fest's second wave right now it should be As It Is... idk how you wrap up touring a week before your album's release and don't have another gig scheduled until 3 months later

Watching Smoking Popes before Motion City Soundtrack at Riot in 2016 was a nice treat.

Block Club's reporting isn't the best sometimes, but the fact of the matter is, they fill a nice niche in Chicago news coverage that a lot of the bigger news outlets won't cover by providing hyperlocal stories in certain neighborhoods that often get overlooked because they're not the Lincoln Parks or River Norths of the city. They have some good people on staff, and considering they were started by a Kickstarter campaign in the wake of Ricketts shutting down DNAInfo, I'm pretty impressed by it.

And if it gets Riot Fest to get off their asses, more power to them.

I love when Sugar Ray get mentioned on here, especially if it's something positive (like your post): I'm still the biggest fan around of them, and Mark lives to make fun of his own band, as much as the next person. He knows how to hold a crowd -- whether it be a couple hundred or thousands!

I should've figured most the usual Riot Fest crowd wouldn't be into FJM. Shouldn't have even brought it up apparently

I'll never buy one of his albums but I'll be damned if his live shows aren't a blast.

    [feigns interest]

Or think of it this way: better chance to get a decent spot for his set.

I know FJM won't be nearly like this, but one great example: Swervedriver in 2015. I got there 5 mins before the set and was just one row of people back from the rail. (It filled in a little bit as show started/went on.) I felt bad for the band in terms of crowd draw, but personally I was thinking "I wish I could post up this close, this easily, for all my favorites!"
