There are two different paths you could take based on this, IMO - there's the melodic death metal route where you've got stuff that's a bit more accessible like old In Flames, Amon Amarth, At the Gates, Dark Tranqulity, Scar Symmetry, etc. or there's the more progressive, doomier route you could take with bands like Opeth, old Katatonia, Paradise Lost, old Anathema, and Swallow the Sun (might be a bit more up your alley than the melodeath route given your interests).

After a quick Google Search, this comment on the death metal subreddit provides a nice road map that I like: r/Deathmetal - I want to get into death metal. Where do I start?

    Happy hunting!

    yeah good okay Prestigious

Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness
Death - basically any album, but Leprosy is a good jumping off point, then hit Symbolic and Human
    Pestilence - Consuming Impulse
Gorguts - Considered Dead (before they went all techy)
Nile - Annihilation of the Wicked
    Atheist - Unquestionable Presence
Bolt Thrower - Realms of Chaos
    Entombed - Left Hand Path
    Immolation - Dawn of Possession
    Nocturnus - The Key
    Deicide - Legion

There's some OSDM, a tiny bit of tech, some cavernous stuff, and some Swedeath in there. Little bit of everything.

    x2

they're on the prog/groove side of things but I'll always rec From Mars to Sirius

    Some stuff for today.

Anyone into heavy as hell fuzzy doom? Conan has a new album coming out in a few weeks with a few songs out already. FFO: Electric Wizard, Bongripper

Also this sick Danish death metal from Dark Descent may have slipped by me earlier in the year, but not today:

And for more Danish death metal, check out Baest (album came out a few weeks ago):

The new King Dude album is really good. It's hard to believe he fronted The Book of Black Earth.

this was me 8 months ago. here are some bands that got me super into it. old and new.

opeth (first death metal band i liked, but theyre more prog but their earlier shit up through when they dropped death metal altogether is all great)
    death
    mammoth grinder
    genocide pact
    gorguts
    cannibal corpse
    at the gates
    black dahlia murder
    amon amarth

ive gotten into a lot of death metal since these bands initially got me interested in the genre. its kind of a hard genre to get into because for years and years and years, aside from opeth, i never liked anything i heard so never gave it a shot. but really sitting down with albums from the classic era and some more modern bands made me really understand it and want to explore it fully

For this week's edition of THRASH METAL THVRSDAY, I wanted to specifically dive into death/thrash in the vein of Morbid Saint and Demolition Hammer. I did some deep diving into some lesser known death/thrash albums from the glory days (mid 80's to early 90's) and found some pretty sick stuff.

First up is the 1990 album Emerging From the Netherworlds by Dutch death/thrash outfit Thanatos. Hella good stuff:

Then we hop back to 1988 and over to Sweden for The Awakening by Merciless. They were the first band to sign to Euronymous' label Deathlike Sentence. Quick listen, about as long as Reign In Blood (27ish minutes):

And probably my favorite find of the day is Golem by Protector. Fast and aggressive German death/thrash right up there with Kreator, and better than Destruction IMO. Also look at that album art:

And for the sake of having something new, here's the new Siege Column album that came out a few weeks ago. It's definitely more on the death side of death/thrash. Ok, it's pretty much death metal but they use the thrash tag on their bandcamp so I'm going with it. Either way it rules:

Randomly came across this today while perusing some music from bands on the Maryland Deathfest lineup next year, and it slaps super, super hard. Hard Charger plays a self-described sound of "crust n' roll" that I think any fan of Motorhead or Midnight will enjoy a lot.

Time for one of my massive listenings dump.

New Fukpig album - black/crust featuring members of Anaal Nathrakh, super catchy riffs and choruses while still sounding real gnarly and wrath-filled.

Naaaaaaasty fucking brutal-technical death metal from Thailand that almost sounds like they take some cues from war metal here and there. This is some serious riff-soup type shit with that awful tin-can snare that I love so much. This is some niche taste shit right here but I seriously dig it.

Deathcore from Ontario, Canada that mixes some elements of modern tech-y deathcore and beatdown-y downtempo moments with some hallmarks traits of old Myspace-core days of old, rough high screams and regurgitated melodeath riffs and all, yet still managing to sound pretty fresh to even my jaded deathcore ears.

Rest, Repose is the current band that Youtube personality Jared Dines is currently going steady with. Kind of a blending of elements of stoner rock and stoner metal with more vanilla traditional heavy metal as well. It took some time to digest but I got into it quite a bit.

I'm also enjoying the new singles from Aborted, Deicide, Monstrosity, Krisiun, Monuments, Scorched and Entombed A.D.

but magus slaps so hard. definite top 15 album of the year for me. it'll probably be higher, but there's been a lot of good stuff out this year so i won't speculate much further.
