Was gonna post this. I might fly down there just for Eternal Champion, honestly. Though seeing Power Trip is always a nice bonus.

i've been revisiting most of the stuff i used to listen to when i was younger, and i never thought i'd say something like this, but i really feel like there's something about heavy music between 1998-2004 that was really special.

anyways, this one has been on repeat

I too have been super behind on stuff but I will vouch for Burial Invocation (death), Innumerable Forms (death), Mutilation Rites (death), Obscura (tech death), and Black Fast (black thrash). I can't remember if you were that much into death metal, but there's that.

The new Frontierer might be more you thing, for all your mathcore needs.

Also I just stumbled onto this band that labels themselves as "fantasy punk" and it's exactly what it says it is:

Hi, Jake. Hope all is well.

The new Dodsrit record is coming out soon and might be up your alley:

Thou's last EP, Rhea Sylvia, sounds like Thou going post-metal to me (supposed to be "grunge" influenced, but I don't hear a lot of it). I know you're a fan of them already, but this is just a reminder to check it out if you haven't yet:

Other recent new stuff I've liked: the new Erosion album (mems of Baptists and Sumac playing d-beat influenced death metal ala Mammoth Grinder), the new Mutilation Rites (blackened death metal from NYC), The Lion's Daughther (synth/sludge metal hybrid from STL), Secret Cutter (sludge/hardcore hybrid on Deathwish), and the new Integrity/Krieg split.

The new burial invocation is a top ten for me.

What a year for death metal.

Got sucked down an Aussie bandcamp wormhole this morning. Here's the new album from Convulsing, a one-man black/death metal hybrid from Sydney. FFO Portal, Ulcerate, Deathspell Omega.

I listened to it last week...it's freaky in a good way, but there's a lot to digest with what's going on. Still trying to figure out my general feelings about it.

Fun new goth rock/NWOBHM hybrid from Portland featuring former members of Spellcaster. I dig this way more than I normally do for bands that have that old school heavy metal sound...especially considering I'd list Volbeat in a FFO description about them upon first listen.

Random Friday updates that I'm not looking too because I'm on mobile at the moment:

-The new Gnaw Your Tongues/Crowhurst collab is haunting in the best way possible, but I'm not sure how much staying power it's gonna have for me. I can only take so much harsh, cacophonous industrial/black metal/noise hybrid stuff.

-The new Leeched is kinda...meh. Mid-tempo HM-2 laden hardcore with black metal and crust elements sounds like it'd be right up my alley once I read the description, but it was kinda mediocre in execution. Just made me want to listen to the new Jesus Piece, which is next in my queue.

The Jesus Piece record is awesome. They start toying with some doomy elements toward the second half. I’ve seen some reviews mention flashes of Neurosis or Amenra and idk if I’d go that far but...I get it

Gonna agree with this...the progression here from their earlier work is nice. I'm gonna need to let it sink in a bit though because I'm not sure where it falls on the pantheon of albums for me this year. I could see it either being a top 10 album for me or barely cracking my top 50.

Further follow-up: The new Mantar slays. Punky blackened doom that sounds MASSIVE when you consider it's coming from two dudes. They need to come back to the states ASAP.
