Honestly, as an atheist, I love the religious shit in mwy’s music. It creates for some very evocative imagery and awesome storytelling.

I was raised in a super christian household and, even though I never felt whatever the rest of them apparently felt, I believed in all of it for a decent amount of time. And struggled heavily with tons of conflicting information, misplaced guilt, outright disagreement of horrific shit that was heralded, etc... and I truly believe that mewithoutYou was essential in me realizing it's okay to question religion.

The lyrics are still so powerful and evocative that it doesn't matter if it's about god, I still get goosebumps from them.

honestly i would love for more christian bands to spend 2-3 albums exploring the notion that the self is a fiction and in fact there is no "self" ("you're not you. you're everyone else"; "the i is an unintelligible lie")

    Someday I’ll find me Prestigious

I’ve always liked music with lyrics based in Christian philosophy and thought, but not necessarily evangelistic in nature.

The bands who do this, well, mewithoutYou is one of them.

As just one guy who writes sad Christian songs, I'll keep this in mind. Look out for The Phantom Self-Identity Trilogy coming at you in 2020!

My favorite artists are those who are pretty blunt about their faith (like My Epic and early As Cities Burn) but are able to capture it as poetically as those who are a bit less so (like mewithoutYou, Sufjan, and Julien Baker). Unfortunately, those are few and far between. Somehow the Christian music industry has become anti-Christian and anti-music all at once. Probably has to do with the word "industry". Ha.

It was really smart that they released the EP so far ahead of the LP. It's not fair, but it seems that EPs are generally overlooked or considered "less than" because they didn't make it on a full length release. Obviously that just isn't true, but I think if they released these at the same time that these 7 songs wouldn't get the attention they definitely deserve.

another thought re: this band's supposed "preachiness": i'd just point to the line in "fox's dream of the log flume," "it's pretty obvious that there's no god / and there's definitely a god." that lyric seems like the center of aaron's whole project

An inconsequential shift as the continents drift.

I Lied My Face Off is still the best EP ever made but this is damn close to that standard imo

    I do not exist.

European shipping options are on their way! So pleased. I was going to order from BSM (who handle the European release) but was disappointed there were no collector's editions in their store. I'll see what the price is when they add it to the mewithoutYou EU/UK store and make a decision!

I wonder if any other singles will come out before the album does. I'd have to guess it will, like they did with Pale Horses, but we'll see.

I'm pretty sure I knew this band was something special when I first heard these lyrics:

After years with a crown on my head I've grown overfed, unconcerned, and comfortably numb
Kept busy indulging in pleasures of the wealthy (someone make me afraid of what I've become!)
At the first sign of possible trouble I turned my heels and ran (Oh, I'll never learn)
My life is a cup of sugar I borrowed before time began and forgot to return
