Hahaha peaked 130 mpw? That’s insane! My peak was 85 mpw and that was our hell week. Ridiculous.

I signed up for my first 50 miler. I’m excited. It’s going to suuuuuuck, but I’m excited to test myself. Training starts in September. I’m just maintaining around 35-40 miles per week right now and then I’ll throw in even longer runs and some hill work to get my strength up.

I think I’m most nervous about dialing in my nutrition though. I need to research it more. If anyone here has any advice or leads I can check out regarding nutrition for ultras, that’d be amazing.

Amazing challenge. Can't really imagine doing something like that right now. Good luck.

I'm gearing up for a mountain 50k in February myself. Longest I've ran straight up until now is 13.1 and the longest trail run with power hiking/walking is 14. Currently building my base mileage to get back to do a half safely. Last year I jumped into a half without a proper build up.. Currently on 25 miles per week from around 10/week coming back from injury and going up slightly each week probably going to plateau for a bit at 30-35 until I get into the true 50k training.

For my nutrition I'm a vegan runner and I like eating real food on my longer hauls and harder workouts. Not necessarily solid food, but i try to stay away from artificial stuff like GU gels and similar stuff that have all the artificial ingredients and refined sugars. I've been using a brand of gels "Spring Energy" for a bit and so far I've had good results. Made with real food and there are different flavors based on circumstance. No gut bombs and have a much better texture than a "GU". Probably more like baby food? I haven't been over 10 miles yet with them though, but so far so good. Once I start getting some longer runs in, I'll start incorporating some organic Cliff bars; maybe some homemade burritos. I'll have to experiment a bit. Longer runs I'll have 2 bottles up front on my hydration pack that will have one bottle with water and the other with coconut water or maybe water/NUUN tablet mix; for the electrolytes.

What I need to find is a good 50k training plan that would help me plan some specific workouts. That and help me on what strength work I can incorporate in the gym or at home. I do some gym stuff now but I'm inconsistent and somewhat "willy-nilly" on what I do. I have even thought about using a........ coach. IDK. I would like to be ready for it and not injure myself. I think I listen to enough trail running and running podcasts and read enough, but maybe I could use some guidance. There's still plenty of time for me to decide.

Man Eat and Run did indeed, I think, push me over the edge to go for it. Been doing it about 4 months. I feel great pretty much all the time. I’m not 100% in on never having meat or cheese again, but I’ve suck with going meat and dairy free since I started. Aside from a time or two I would try a bite of my wife’s burger or pizza that she has just because I’m curious how it tastes. The other day she wasn’t now going to finish her burger and it was enough to take home, so I finished it off so it wouldn’t go to waste. I regret nothing.

A switch hasn’t been flipped on my running or anything, but I’m confidant it’s helping. Especially that I try to eat all organic, Whole Foods at all times with minor deviation.

so after months of struggling with this and no real answer I think I am good to go now. **KNOCK ON WOOD**

in the end, I think it was the Altra's giving me the problem. I either just rushed into wearing a "no drop" shoe or they just aren't for me. picked up a pair of Addidas Adizero Boston's and it is so much better on my legs and knees. I also discovered through all of this that my knees are incredibly tilted so I need more support than the Altra's were offering.

ran 6 miles yesterday with zero pain. fuck does it feel good!

Skipped my long run on the weekend so I could do a long run mid week on the trails. Did 10 miles on the trail yesterday evening and it felt so good. Getting super tired of the pavement right now haha. I signed up for a 10 mile trail race on Saturday since a lot of my buddies are doing it. It will be good training with a lot of steep climbs.

I'm also excited for my vacation the week after. Going to North Carolina in the mountains for some relaxation and fun and I found a cool 8k/15k trail race on the weekend I signed up for to cap it all off. Doing the 8k and plan on ripping it. Haven't ran a race out of state yet so this should be fun.

Another thing I may do is move around my training based on my work schedule. My training plan is the normal Mon-Sun timeline with long runs on the weekend. I always work 6-2 on Sundays so I'll get home after work, rest, then run long. Other shifts in the week are a mixed bag(retail). I'm on my feet most of the day so it wears on me even if I don't realize it. I think i'll adjust my training plan to fit my work schedule more so I can run long on my off days to focus on recovering. Same goes with harder workouts.

a few weeks a go, i completely burned out on doing the same road runs by my house every day. decided to go exploring in my mountains and have been completely rejuvenated with getting off the road. still like busting out a screamer on the road maybe once a week or so but trails have been my savior as of late.

Man that’s a cool view. I want to get out that way someday to run and see the sights. All the trails around me are single track in the woods and sometimes overgrown a bit in the summer. So critters can sometimes be close and you won’t know until you’re right up on one(snake). So I don’t do much wooded trails in the summer unless it’s in a group. I can find some good dirt roads but they all are a bit of a drive to get to. Heck a month ago on a 10 mile dirt road loop we ran up on 4 separate poisonous snakes. x_x

would def be sketched out by that. i have an unnatural fear of running into a bear or mountain lion so it's definitely something i've had to go out and deal with.

I am just now discovering this thread. Wow.

I am more than halfway through training for my first marathon (Chicago) and running more and longer than I ever have before. I've done 3 halfs and 2 overnight races (WI-IL Ragnar and the Dead 2 Red in Jordan).

We have some black bears and small cats out in the woods here but nothing really to be alarmed about any bigger than little critters. I think I would rather have bear/mountain lion fear than snake fear.(?). Idk.

Well, something I didn't really fear in the woods until yesterday was yellow jackets. Did a 10.5m trail race on Saturday, and while in the backcountry of the course the super fast ones stirred up a yellow jacket nest. I got zapped 7 or more times at mile 6. Other runners of course got the same treatment as me. It really demoralized me at the time. Since I was in the backcountry I kept thinking about if I had a reaction no one could get me out and that sort of thing. Before that I was doing great. I slowed up a bit after that but still finished strong. I didn't bring enough water for the 6 miles of no aid stations; 1 bottle of water, 1 bottle with electrolyte drink. Not a big deal normally for 6 miles, but there were some MONSTER climbs in that section that were basically crawling up the mounting at 0.5 MPH. I developed some blisters on my left food that made me overcompensate on the right foot.

I'm not really sore today which is great except for my stings on my back are still uncomfortable. I finished in 2h18m with around a 14:23 avg pace. Approx 2723ft of vertical gain.

Even though the stings sucked, I can't wait to do it again. I love trail running.

(Me at the end giving the ol' "glad it's over" thumbs up. Took my shirt off with the bees)

I needed this. It feels so good to be back out there, it was really starting to fuck with my head. It's been a rough few months for me personally, finally have time to just focus on me and getting Marathon ready.

Following a 12 week training schedule, would have liked a few more weeks but here we are. Long run Saturday with a recovery run on Sunday, alternating low and slow during the week with some cross training. So far so good!

I will admit I've been slacking on my cross-training for my first marathon these past few weeks. I was doing a stair machine, stationary bike (standing and sitting), and jump roping. I do manage to get some ab work in to tighten my core and improve my posture though.

My question is: has cross-training ever made or broken a run for you? What do you recommend for cross-training?

The more cross training the better that fits with your mileage. But if you only have time for one thing it would be core work for sure. Strong core translates directly to distance running and helps prevents sloppy technique in later miles or climbs.

I am less than 4 weeks away from my first marathon and I stopped boozing on 9/4 (race is 10/7). I always cut booze a month away from a race as a last minute cut in calories, increase in hyration, and as an exercise in willpower. Lost 2 pounds already since 9/4.

i wish i had that willpower although i've had some of my best races with a little hang for some reason.
