I've never heard the phrase Dad Rock before, but being a 32 year old father I give this album my full endorsement.

More so than dad-rock I justttt became bothered by the term straight forward being tossed at this album which I cannot comprehend. If this album is straight forward then their whole discog is no different. Vheissu imo is their most unique album but there isnt anything to remarkably different in the song writing approach than this album. Though Vheissu will forever be the best their record to me. This is not a straightforward album.

Hurricane- Opening with Beatles-eque acoustic with/wind chimey sounds twinkling and ending with the absolutely destroying polarized minor key outro NOT STRAIGHT FORWARD.
    BOTS-Ok fine. straight forward
WIndow- 7/4 Time Signature! Radiohead esque chord progression, some kinda modal shift outro with falsetto vocals and some hidden melody NOT STRAIGHT FORWARD
Wake Up-Close but those smoooth bluesy verses juxtaposed with some big time breakdown and a classic rock chorus. Gonna say close but NOT STRAIGHT FORWARD.
The Long Defeat- The outro alone makes it NOT STRAIGHT FORWARD
Seneca-NOT STRAIGHT FORWARD (wish it were longer)
Black Honey-Those octave vocals sound unique but i'll say overall its straight forward, although using the same melody at the end with a new chord progression is pretty awesome.....nah NOT STRAIGHTFORWARD
Stay With Me- Probably the most straight forward, but still dig the apocalyptic love song lyrics
Death From Above-This song is insanely unique with the clean guitar verses and HEAVY chorus with time sig changes and a euphoric outro that sounds like nothing else in the song. A truly unique piece. NOT STRAIGHT FORWARD.
Whistleblower- Reminds me of Vhiessu and hard to pinpoint but this song sounds straight THRICEY, the outro starts to get slightly out of tune in a disturbing kinda way NOT STRAIGHT FORWARD
Salt and Shadow- I won't even say anything....NOT STRAIGHT FORWARD.

I can see this record standing next to Vheissu for me in the Thrice discog.

Too bad they couldn't have fleshed out Seneca a bit and produced something similar to Night Diving. I still love it for what it is, a bridge closing the first half of the album and introducing the second half.

The Alchemy Index is their most unique record IMO. Then they kinda hone that sound on their magnum opus, Beggars.

Vheissu is definetly the most important album in the bands career, no doubting that though.

Illusion of Safety put them on the map. Great record, still holds up today, and influenced a lot of other bands.

Haha. I love this post. I absolutely agree, this record for the most part is NOT STRAIGHT FORWARD. I think the fact that Thrice can teeter on the edge of accessibility and still be unique and complex says more about them then if they were full-on experimental every time.

This record is still not getting old after hours upon hours of listening. I think I might end up liking it more than Vhessiu (but not Beggars).

That's what I said initially and had to take a step back. Still not sure where it falls, but that's what I'm leaning towards still.

I like this front to back better than any of their other albums. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Pulled into my school parking lot right when Dustin starts screaming at the end of blood in the sand.. The other teachers gave me some weird looks for sure.. Also was blasting the music like a teenager

Beggars and Major/minor are the most similar to this.

Now is a good time to mention this. If you attend this tour, please do not share the setlist (in full, mentioning a song is probably okay, maybe use spoilers) in this thread. We have a forum for that, and many concert goers want to go in and be surprised. Thanks everyone!

^^^^^ agreed. Beggars sounds nothing like this. I'd say more of Major Minor mixed with Alchemy Index and sprinkled with Vheissu. To be honest, not a fan of beggars and pretty forgettable to me. Only stand out tracks are Circles and In Exile.

beggars is an incredible record.. Id say it's their second best. I would probably rank this 4th. Vhiessu, beggars, alchemy, this.. Which is not a bad thing anything that's top 5 for trice is pretty sick

To me this album sounds like a less experimental, more refined Fire and Air with a dash of their entire catalogue post IOS.

I still can't stop listening to it. I listened to the new If These Trees Could Talk this morning and it felt so weird listening to something else, haha.

I'm still not sure where I'd rank it. I'm going to listen to their entire catalogue this weekend again and then I'll see.
