And it's not just a matter of not hearing the guitars. The track just sounds muddled to me. The vocals don't sound enmeshed with the music, something others pointed out with "The Grey." TBE sounded more cohesive across the board.

That being said, it's growing on me.

    This 100%.

Sometimes it’s nice to just listen to a song without nitpicking it apart

I enjoy the production on these two tracks more than the last album, specifically the vocal production. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@sophos34 i like hearing your thoughts on production cause you at least know what your talking about and have real experience. The rest of us are armchair production experts haha

I adore this song, listened to it through about 7 times, now to stay away from it until release. No single from TBEITBN made me feel like this song does, hope the record is consistent in quality.

Even reading some of the impressions in here, I was really surprised by how synthy it was. Loved the jam at the end.

Want to read the lyrics, but think I caught enough of them to say I like them.

I am excited to have new Thrice. I trust those guys, their process, and their work as artists and musicians. I trust them in such a way that I know my taste and appreciation for what they create will only grow on me.

This is all with just one listen through, and I will not return until I have the whole album.

The guitars yield to the bass and synth in this song. They're functioning as the bass normally would. Of course, you can hear them in the last 1/3 of the song. The bass and synth are still the predominant instruments in this song. A little lead catharsis from Teppei would've gone a long way. His pixie dust is a key ingredient in any successful Thrice song. As was the case with "The Grey," I just feel they could've opened both songs up a little more to where those Thrice chills are magnified. I'll say this: it's better than "The Grey."

Most of those people gripe about their evolving sound. I'm talking about the missing attributes that have always been present regardless of how much they've shifted genres.

The underlying question Palmquist posed during TBE is "What makes a successful Thrice song?"

Hm. The “most people are complaining about their evolving sound, whereas I’m complaining about their evolving sound” defense is a bold strategy.

It hasn’t proven successful thus far, but maybe this time...

can we at least stop acting like mike j is the biggest thrice fan in the thread

Universal praise is not a prerequisite for being a great fan. Being the biggest Thrice fan in this thread is why I'm critical when necessary. Talking this stuff out has already helped my appreciation for the song.

I would hate to over-analyze stuff, I'm so glad my brain doesn't work this way. I honest to goodness wouldn't be listening to music that much anymore, it kills all joy for me when I sit here and dive into the intricacies of what makes a band a band. In my opinion, Thrice can do anything and everything and still feel like Thrice, there's a certain DNA that never leaves this band, no matter how much they experiment. Admittedly I don't know about music at this technical of a level as much as some of you, but boy am I glad that I don't.

And I am not trying to bash anyone, but seriously sometimes ignorance truly is bliss.

I have no problem with a bass and synth driven song. It's not like they haven't made songs in this general direction before.

IMO, the biggest THRICE fan is clearly that poster who wanted to pay like $1,000 to hear TBEITBN early.

I can only imagine how many conduits that person has listened to Only Us through.

  22. “That Thrice play it.”

Solved it. You’re over thinking this by putting everything in boxes. It’s a different version of the same “Thrice should keep making 'Deadbolt'” fans.

Should I universally praise everything from now on? Is that what you guys want? Clearly, that's the path of least resistance.

My only real Thrice nitpick is Dustin (i'm assuming here) has become obsessed with standard structure since the Alchemy Index.
I'd like too them experiment with structure a bit more since I always seem to love the bridge and the heavier last chorus / outro

Disagree or criticize away. Just stop acting like being a fan since first impressions makes you an authority
