That's what I had heard too. The runner thing seems to be the truth, though.

I always heard it was about someone he never dated who had a bf which seemed awkward af to me. I kind of enjoy that ~urban legends spawned from the song lol

    Give what you can.

I heard the song was about the dude's cat who ran away to NYC. Apparently the cat made friends with a street wise shepherd mix voiced by Billy Joel and they ran around the city all day committing petty larceny and singing throwback rock tunes. I guess I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure I'm not.

Starting to sound more like an SNL skit, which would actually be awesome.

The real story is rather creepy in my opinion, i understand she seems rather grateful near the end for the exposure and all that. But the way she talks about the early life of the song to me sounds alarming.

    Heres the article:

The Mag: A song about a runner turns into a Grammy nominated hit.

this poor woman has some creepy dude write a song about her when he knows she isn't available and then feels bad that she might have led him on? i'm so glad that ten years on the culture is changing a bit- i can't imagine a story like this playing out as happily now. glad her career took off and that the publicity didn't hurt it.

Yeah, that's the only reason I shared mine, just some weird story that's stayed with me through the years.

Hey, that could work as a TV show.

funny you mention, there's actually a GREAT young adult novel called "Audrey, Wait!" that's pretty much about this. It features the titular Audrey breaking up with her burnout punk boyfriend, who writes a song about it on the spot. They get famous off the song and her life turns into a paparazzi nightmare. I first read it in 2008 or 2009 soon after it was published and it was like a meteorite- a book with a cool punk girl protagonist? The chapter titles are lyrics by bands I like? An entire scene revolves around her friend coaxing her out of the house with "Cute without the E?" Anyway. Everyone should read that and wonder why they didn't choose THAT to adapt:

    Audrey, Wait

The band has always been awful, and the song is easily the worst thing they've ever released - though granted I've only heard like 3 of their songs. The fact that it has a legacy in the eyes of some people makes depresses me.

Well, Jeeze, if she was so grossed out about it, why did she appear on Ellen with him, Go to The Grammys with him, talking about it on Good Morning America? Tom has said from the beginning that he knew she wasn't interested in him, and during the Grammys press junket, she was nothing but a good sport.
