I don't hate Bortles at all

I just don't think he is the 56th best player in the league. not anywhere close.

and I realize these lists are meaningless, but its June lol

If you think this is bad check out Pete priscos list, that guy...

  4. June is the time of year where I read stuff like Stephen Hill has looked like a different player in OTAs and is close to a lock for the final roster.

Bortles deserves to be where he is at in terms of other QBs. The weirdest thing is Alex Smith above Carr and Luck.

Bortles is not better than Luck, nor Smith for that matter.

  10. I thought Bortles played pretty well last year, if we can back that up this season with an even better year I'd gladly put him over Alex Smith.

    v interesting

hopefully with a bolstered OL, we won't have to make Cameron block so much

This list is based off of last season's performances most of all so it should be obvious why Bortles was above Luck; Luck played poorly.

I'm not gonna disagree with you on Luck yet, i think he had a rough year and should go back to being a great downfield passer, his already good pocket presence would be amplified if he had a good line. Though if he somehow fails to bounce back at all in 2016 while Bortles progresses then it might be arguable.

Blake Bortles is absolutely better than Alex Smith. Alex Smith is only as good as the KC Chiefs are good and they're dominant as a roster right now. He's not going to take a team with a shitty defense and still win shootouts like Bortles had to for a couple wins and most losses last year.

Give me 3rd & 10 or 4th & 8 down by a TD and I take Blake Bortles over Alex Smith all day.

Yeah, that's a lot of money though it's worth noting that Demaryius, Julio, Green, and Fitz are the only receivers being paid more than him that did better than him. Hurns $10 million a year is going to do more harm to other teams than it will to ours in the long run.

I mean, I'd rather give $40 million to Hurns than Pierre Garcon, Torrey Smith, Michael Crabtree, or Marvin Jones and you have guys like Mohamed Sanu who didn't even get 400 yards last year but is being paid $32 million.

  17. You can spin it however you want but $10m per season for him is risky. I know Jags technically have a lot of money to spend but they also have a good number of young players that will need an extension in the near future. They need to be careful with these extensions and not just toss out overpayments to everyone.

Props to hurns agent and his solid play.

Honestly it looks like the list isn't really based on anything specifically. If it were based off last season's performances then Luck wouldn't be on the list at all, he only played 7 games and as you mentioned played poorly in them.
Bortles hasn't won a shootout? I mean the Jags did beat the Bill 34-31 last year, which I guess is arguably a shootout, but Bortles passed for less than 185 yards, only completed 13 passes with a completion percentage <50%, and threw for two touchdowns to one interception. Hardly him winning a shootout especially considering the interception he threw that game was a pick six. Alex Smith has won a shootout before, but that's kind of besides the point because games are rarely shootouts. There is no doubt that they are vastly different quarterbacks and so personal preference plays a bit of a part, but Smith is better at his game than Bortles is at his right now.

I think this is a really myopic way to judge quarterbacks, other situations matter.

I mean, 3rd and 10 doesn't matter as much when you throw an interception on 2nd down, does it?

They definitely need to be careful but I'm not too worried.

Games are rarely shootouts for Alex Smith because he's always had an amazing defense. 49ers when they were good, Chiefs now that they are good.

The Jaguars gave up 42 points including an 87 yard QB run to the 2-14 Titans last year, and despite a missed field goal, and a missed extra point, and the center hiking two passes way over his head, Bortles still got the Jags within a field goal.

They allowed 38 to the Buccaneers and Bortles matched every TD until the end.

I know the Titans and Bucs have a bad defense, check out the 25-28 loss to the Jets. At the time anyone would have laughed if I said he'd throw 384 yards and 3 TDs against Revis, Cromartie and that All-Pro D Line.

The Jaguars fell behind 24-0 mid second quarter against the Saints and though the game was never close as the Saints kept scoring, Bortles responded by hitting a 90 and two 30 ish yard TDs, you really can't ask for more out of a 2nd year quarterback who is asked to lead a team with just as little experience.

You can't underestimate the value of situational football. Players like John Elway and Terry Bradshaw and even at times Ben Roethlisberger rode average statistical performance to the superbowl because they were difficult to limit and game plan against on third and long. They could simultaneously dodge obvious third down pressure in the pocket and make challenging throws down the field into tight windows, and that kept the team in games even though they weren't nearly as precise or consistent aa other greats in their generation (Roger Staubach and Steve Young, for example.)

Now, to say Bortles is in their company is just as dumb as that Favre comparison, but Alex Smith also isn't this Tom.Brady west coast spread maestro. To diminish the explosive potential Blake gave a team that lacked everything aside from its passing game, it just doesn't take into account the reasons WHY Bortles had to take so many risks and attempt to misdirect the defense like a veteran, to convert that third and 15 after Joeckel gave up another sack. Some of it is inexperience, a lot of it is just we fell behind because of our defense and now Blake has to try to be Philip Rivers and pull off several 12 yard throws in traffic to score.

Games shouldn't be shootouts though, those are hella boring

Its a list of top 100 players as ranked by other players.

"NFL Network brings you the Top 100 Players of 2016 voted on by the players themselves."

So, on one hand I'd say it actually matters far more than an ESPN or NFL.com list, since the players know how good other players are, and who is over-rated. On the other hand, most guys get to see maybe 1 or 2 games from people...so, its kind of like the coaches poll in the NCAA. Gives power to the big names over actual results[/QUOTE]
