Why would you need an award for popular film? Isn't the swimming pool full of money enough?

 

This is so fucking stupid. What qualifies as a "popular" film? What if an independent film makes a shit ton of money? Does it qualify for this category? This is such a shameless, obvious grab for ratings I can't even believe it.

 

Might as well go full mtv movie awards and have an oscar for best awkward kiss or some shot like that

 

It's definitely for movies like Marvel, Harry Potter, etc. Movies that make a shit ton of money, but aren't high brow enough for best picture

It's 1000% in response to Black Panther.

 

The whole reason they expanded the Best Picture category was to let more blockbusters get nominated and all they got were more Oscar bait trash.

To be fair, though, on most years there is a good chance the Best Popular Movie will be better than the Best Picture winner.
