Disliking something is different from it being bad. You can dislike it and it can still be good music.

I think it's doing pretty well for no more than the guys have spoken about it. Feel like I've heard a lot of casual fans at least mention that they like it (which is more than I could have said for "Up All Night").

I went on a little road trip this weekend and heard a couple of different radio stations shout out California after they played "I Miss You". Very weird that they played that song and not "Bored to Death" but still cool.

  3. Why? This is the most successful thing they've done in years. They don't need to promote the album like the band on a record label where if they sell 1000 copies it's a success.

  4. I never said differently.

Said I'm okay, but I know how to lie.

I mean it's gone for me personally.

  6. If you're on this website in this thread, I don't think they're worried about marketing to you.

this is the key people don't seem to realize. blink aren't a small band on a small label. They're a big band on a big label and will probably have a Top 5 album when it's released (Neighborhoods was #2 for reference; 2nd to J Cole). This is how major release are handled. We'll probably get a song or two before the album, but until then, nothing more. And that's all how the label is planning it and managing it. It's not 'poorly managed'. As Jason said, the marketing for this album isn't designed for anyone on this site.

But I need everything to the tailored and aimed at me so that I can feel special and part of the process!

I feel the same way about some of your hyperbole regarding anything Tom has ever touched.

just as real as the people who believe bored to death is the best thing blink has done

More I listen to "Bored To Deah," I still dig it for sure, but let's not pretend they haven't recycled anything here. Kind of reminds me of when "Up All Night" came out. I was stoked and then i realized as a first single, it wasn't as strong as it should have been, and both those songs have good lyrics and big choruses.

  13. Calling Tom a musical genial is hyperbole, saying he's a bad lyricist is not.

"terrible music" is completely subjective. There's no universal standard for what makes music good.

anyway this discussion needs to end here. Transfer it over to "unpopular music opinions" if you want to keep it going.

So I fell out of the blink loop entirely when neighborhoods and DED came out. Can you and the other regulars here fill me in as to how the fan base was when those two came out. For example, compare/contrast the response to BTD than any releases from that time. Is the reaction to BTD about the same as those, is it more over the top, is it justified, etc?

A musical genius is a bit much for sure. I've always enjoyed his lyrics and concepts he chose to write about, even though lately some of it is has been kinda formulaic

The closest think blink ever had to "genius" level musicianship was and is Travis. Mark, Tom, Scott, and Matt are all average to sub-par musicians. So calling Tom out is just stupid...it was Tom's attitude and direction that was driving the band down. Mark's brand of sub-par music jives with me and it's what I hear when I think of blink-182.

Tom is off doing his own thing now and I'm happy for him. I don't think any of his stuff is particularly good but I can see how others would dig it. I just want that shit no where near blink haha.

Blink has said many of times that they bring best out of each other---that is the "genius" of blink-182.
Peep what they said when I interviewed them when Neighborhoods (kind of funny how they defended working in different studios then) dropped. Not too far off from what they have been saying now

  19. I only recall that the initial first listens of the first singles from both of those releases were very positive and exciting. Even "Boxing Day" which, in retrospect, is pretty subpar, actually.

  20. all bands say the same things when they have new stuff coming out. they need to just let the music speak for itself.

I love how blink released two shite releases and hyped them up to the hills and Thrice just released an absolute beast of an album and one of their members had an interview the other day still not happy with it.

Quality in art, like music, is not completely subjective. What you *like* is subjective, they are two different things in the dissection of the metaphysics of quality. Me tossing a penny against a wall and recording it is does not have the same quality as Mozart.

Nah, it's not an unpopular musical opinion, it's Plato's to Kant's aesthetics through Pirsig's MOQ and back again.

"This album isn't that great but hey. It's the best we could do for now. There's elements of Enema and Dude Ranch but that was mainly because we ran out of new ideas. Ah well. Sorry everyone. Buy it if you want to. Whatevz. I'm rich anyway."

thrice and blink aren't in the same ballpark when it comes to their music and song-writing. comparing them is pointless.
