I’ve never been into REM based on their singles but I’m willing to give them another shot. What’s generally considered their best record?

Listening and nothing stands out. Pretty boring music. Nothing special.

 

They are the rare band where every fan seems to have a different favorite.

 

I don't hate them, but always found what I heard to be perfectly generic radio rock. Not bad by any means, just so bland.

If you think R.E.M. are "generic radio rock" you need to listen to Fables of the Reconstruction or New Adventures in Hi-Fi.

 

The idea of "nothing standing out" when listening to REM is mind boggling

 

Just for y'all, I'll check out that Fables album and will report back.

i don’t even love the band. i can’t really tell you the last time i listened to them. not respecting them as obviously one of the most talented of our lifetime is really stupid though. but that’s your cross to bear.

 

I can respect them for being influential and a landmark band and still personally not be a fan of them.

I'd probably agree with that, haha. Pop punk and most emo bands do nothing for me.

 

Farting is great. That's all I have to contribute to this thread at the moment.

 

This thread is going to make me listen to a full R.E.M album for the first time so there's that.

Losing My Religion is very good.

 

I love REM now, but I will say that they turned me off for the longest time based solely on some of their biggest songs like End of The World, Losing My Religion, Everybody Hurts, etc. Doing a chronological deep dive into their discog a few years ago helped me to realize how many amazing songs they have outside of their singles/greatest hits.
