A Serbian Film, Audition, Cannibal Holocaust (that’s a definite), probably a few more I’m blanking on.

Martyrs is essential viewing imo and shouldn't be grouped in with Cannibal Holocaust or Serbian Film. The difference is that the violence isn't gratuitous or without reason - it serves a narrative/thematic purpose for its thought provoking finale

I didn’t say anything about the quality, just that based on what I’ve read it’s not something I could ever handle.

Oh yeah I’ve heard from those who could take it that it’s really well done. I definitely agree that that specific era of filmmaking was somehow more brutal than basically anything ever and hasn’t really been replicated since.

Resolution and Spring are both on Shudder last I checked.

I liked it a lot. I feel like it could have been a lot better if the two directors weren't the leads, but they didn't ruin it for me.
If you liked Resolution, you kinda have to see this one.

i would argue Audition is of similar merit to Martyrs (ie both valuable pieces of extreme media) in fact. Cannibal Holocaust is of significance for its historicity, although I understand why folks don't tolerate it for sure. A Serbian Film is just bad imo.

    a serbian film is garbage

the others are good but i, too, understand why people wouldn't watch cannibal holocaust

  11. Drewski

    Maybe so, maybe not.

I'm guessing the Cannibal Holocaust aversion stems from the treatment of animals in the film?

that and its kinda racist sentiments, although i've seen it argued that (intentionally or not) it serves as a deconstruction of colonialism by the actions of its "protagonists"

    Doing fine. Prestigious

Martyrs is extreme, but the violence is very relevant to the message of the film. Definitely wouldn’t classify it as torture porn.

I recommend reading Alex West’s book on the new French extremity- I know I can’t handle watching them at all but I LOVED reading a college textbook about them. The kindle edition is on sale for $4, but you can also get it from the library.

Not a great movie but The Green Inferno made me cringe a couple times.

Finally watched Raw, good movie, really enjoyed it. Gonna watch either Oculus, The Wailing, or The Devils Candy later today.

  17. I've been semi-interested in The Green Inferno for a while now, but I wouldn't really consider myself a Roth fan, so I haven't been in a rush to see it.

That series is certainly one of the strangest stories ever. Going from a true classic of the genre to basically full on comedy spoof and then back again to true, acclaimed horror is a wild ride. I’m down for whatever they want to do.

Also I met Brad Dourif years ago and he was like the sweetest, most soft spoken person and it was amazing.
