Hey all! I just started reading comics/graphic novels late last fall. New to the game. I've read: the killing joke, kingdom come, Deadpool vs. thanos, old man Logan, Deadpool kills Marvel universe, flashpoint, the long Halloween, a batman vs. superman collection, and a few others. Currently reading Marvel 1602 and the first walking dead compendium.

Does anyone have any suggestions for me to start with/go to next? I really want to read planet hulk and WWH and the Miles Morales Spider-man series.

I would love to see a list of recs for me honestly.

Also, can someone explain the terminology to me? Like omnibus, trade book, etc.

Hey! Welcome! I will come at you with recs later, but I thought I could help with this first.

I'll start at the beginning: the monthly comic book! Individual comics, the ones that are published each month, are often called "issues" or "floppies." These are priced between 2.99-4.99 and are 20-22 pages long. Most comic book series are considered "ongoing," which basically means they don't have a stated end date and just continue to tell serialized stories each month. In other words, you should be able to come in once a month and there should be a new issue of the Superman monthly comic there waiting for you. A limited or mini series is also published in individual issues, but they have a definite end point. So, you know going into it that there will only be 5 issues of this comic telling a finite story. A series like Hellboy is kind of a hybrid, almost operating closer to a television series. It is an ongoing story, but it is published using limited or mini-series, much in the same way a TV show uses seasons. So one limited series will last six issues, telling a complete story, and then the next limited series will tell another Hellboy adventure for six issues.

Usually, a "trade" refers to a collection of one story arc from an ongoing monthly series. It has become rather common for an ongoing comic, say the Superman comic, to tell a story over the course of 6 individual monthly issues. Those six issues are then collected into a "trade." So it is the difference between collecting the issues as they come out each month (buying issues #1, and then #2, etc.), or just waiting until the stories told within those individual issues gets collected into a trade. So you will usually see trades being numbered, which corresponds to their publishing order. The first Superman trade, indicated with a 1, collects issues #1-6. The second trade would collect issues #7-12. And so on. That is how it works in theory, but publishers can be a little inconsistent with numbering or the naming.

As for omnibus, these are often oversized hardcovers collecting more issues than a traditional trade. It has become common to collect the complete runs of certain creators, which can often span 20-100 issues, into one over-sized hardcover called an omnibus. In short, an Omnibus usually has 25 or so comics, and is often hardcover. A trade is usually only 6 issues long.

Trade paperbacks, or trades, are collections of single issues into one paperback book. Hardcovers are, well, hardcover. Omnibuses are bigger, more complete collections. Graphic novels are technically the books that weren't initially released as single issues, but sometimes people use that to describe trades collecting miniseries.

Miles Morales is a new enough character that you should just start at the beginning. Everything up until last year's big Secret Wars event (which moved the character and his supporting cast from an alternate side universe to the main Marvel universe) can be found in these three "ultimate collection" trades (which is easier than getting all the smaller trades):

If you enjoy Miles Morales and Robert Kirkman's writing, I would recommend Invincible. I've been addicted to the story since starting the first trade a couple weeks ago, and it only appears to be getting better as I continue.

Batman-wise, definitely check out Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo's acclaimed run from the New 52. It just concluded so I'm sure some bigger trades/an omnibus is in the works.

I'd personally recommend Punk Rock Jesus. It's super fun and pretty thought-provoking, but I guess it might also be somewhat controversial, too.

I should probably decide if I want to pick up some of the Rebirth one-shots tomorrow. I'm sure I'll be interested in Batman. What all will you guys be picking up tomorrow and the 8th for these?

 

I am going all in for the Rebirth one-shots. I will be picking up each, but there are some I am much more excited for than others.

This week: Batman tops my list. Tom King is a great writer on a ridiculous hot streak. I am also looking forward to Superman because he is my favorite hero.

Next week: Wonder Woman by Greg Rucka. He has written my favorite WW stuff and he is returning to the character. Also, Flash by Joshua Williamson. He has been doing solid work on creator-owned stuff at IMAGE, so I will be excited to see him on a monthly book at the Big Two.

 

Nice! I definitely want to check out some writers I'm less familiar with, which is a good chunk of them. I'm thinking of picking up at least Batman, WW, and Flash.

 

Finished Simone's run of Batgirl apparently. I figured I still had like 15 issues but I guess not. I loved the entire series except a really anti-climatic ending. I think the Ragdoll issue might have been my favorite.

 

Burnside Batgirl is dope too, read it too!

 

Ugh I don't know how I feel about the art. Is it still pretty dark? That's one of the main reasons I liked Simone's run.

 

Flashpoint came in the mail today. I've been told, though, that I need to get the Batman tie-in trade as well. It'll be a bit before I place another IST order. In the meantime, as far as event type trades go, I have Identity Crisis, Final Crisis and Kingdom Come. Any suggestions on which of those I should start with once I finish up Snyder's Batman? I'm on Death of the Family now so I have a ways to go still haha. I'm just weird and want to plan out a reading order for June basically before I go buy more trades.

 

Oh it's definitely less grim dark!

 

I'll give a few issues a try but it might not be for me. Does it tie in with Batman's Endgame at all? And do you know if it gives a conclusion to James Gordon's (brother) story because they left that up in the air.

 

Ragdoll is the best. Check out Secret Six of you want to see more of him. His humor is the best.

Has anyone read Spider-Gwen? I was really intrigued by the art when I scanned through it.

 

I only read Edge of Spider-Verse #2 (her debut) and the first arc of her series, before Secret Wars. I liked it a lot, but I liked Spider-Woman more, and I wanted to read some different books, so I haven't been keeping up. A friend who read further before dropping it to save money said the first arc after Secret Wars was good. If you like the art and like classic Spider-Man, I'd say it's worth checking out.

I'd also HIGHLY recommend the first trade of Silk. I haven't liked recent issues as much, but that first arc was one of my favorite Spider-Man-related things I've read in recent years. I think Cindy Moon might be my favorite Spider-character after Peter and Miles (depending on if you count the Jessica Drew Spider-Woman, who I tend not to associate with that world as much as other characters).

 

Just finished Death of the Family. So good.

 

Read the rebirth titles save for Green Arrow. (sold out!) Enjoyed them. Honestly don't know which one to get.

 

Can't wait to get home and read the Rebirth titles. Can honestly say this is the first time I've been pumped for DC releases since I started reading comics weekly. Guess what they're doing is working haha.
