Saw last week, loved it, just caught up with the thread. My biggest take away was about how much manipulation was involved with the family, from the cult and the Grandma, the parallel to the miniatures about control really connects with me. One little thing, like the Grandma's image being near her boxes of stuff, and that freaking out Annie so she doesn't go back to look through it again, has such a huge effect on their plans, it was all really thought out from a cult perspective.

He thinks she's going to kill him, they're trying to wear him down mentally, not kill him. I don't think he can be dead to be the host, but at the end when he is mentally destroyed and physically wounded the demon has no issues.

I don't think there is any legitimate mental illness, those were just used to rationalize the demonic presence in their lives. Leigh killed her husband after she didn't need him anymore, tried to possess her son, and has definitely had control in Annie's life, to the point where she's at least subconsciously aware that her mom wants to take Peter. The "I'm trying to save you!'' line in the scene about the miscarriage not working is very telling for the whole film.

The seance I think is the real driver. Paimon is released from Charlie but doesn't actually have much power until they are manipulated into that seance. Then the shit gets real.

  2. I was having trouble staying awake and passed out during a few bits between Charlie cutting off the bird's head and the beginning of the party scene. Did I miss much?

I don't consider myself much of a horror fan, but I absolutely loved this--except the ending. I think The Babadook was scarier, but this was more dreadful. I initially felt like the ending came out of nowhere, but the more I thought about it (and the more I read this thread), the more it made sense in relation to previous scenes. I still don't know if I'd say I liked the ending, but I don't hate it anymore.

After loving this, The Babadook, A Quiet Place, and Get Out (and mother!...?) so much, I'm starting to think maybe I just haven't watched the right horror movies. I guess unless it's self-aware like Scream Queens, I'm not much into jump scares and camp.

I think if you liked some of the more recent "prestige" horror movies like you listed then check out The Witch. Very very good movie, and kinda similar to this one.

  7. Prestige horror, huh? I guess you're right, but I don't like how it makes me sound like a picky snob haha

I've had It Follows on my watchlist for months after peeking in on the Horror Thread from time to time, I'm guessing that's another one?

I'm sure it might be somewhat hyperbolic of me to say to some but I kind of feel like A24 saved the modern American horror movie. when you compare their films to what else is going on in the genre, it can be pretty damn bleak. sure there are other great horror films and film studios out there but I really just can't commend A24 enough for giving us such quality horror films time and time again

They’re both horror movies from the same production company released in the last two years.

It Follows was the movie that got me back into horror. I love it so much!

Hereditary, It Follows, The Witch, It, have been the best horror movies to come out in the last 20 years imo. Was really hoping/expecting for the new Halloween movie to have the same kind of vibe but based of the preview, I was way off

oh ya I forgot about It Follows. really fun movie. I don't think it was particularly scary but I loved the premise, especially considering how cheesy the idea could potentially look on paper, it was done really well.

I was being a jerk about it. The reasons they were being compared were obvious.

I watched The Witch last week after hearing all of the comparisons to this film. It wasn't scary but it was very unsettling. I have a feeling that had I seen it in theaters, it would have been much more of an experience.

all we still doing spoilers in here and also for other movies?

The Witch: more about witches than like demons
Hereditary: more about cutting off heads of stuff than like being witches

Those are certainly some of the best.

Get Out, The Cabin in the Woods, Green Room, You're Next, Kill List, The House of the Devil, Drag Me to Hell, Let the Right One In, and 28 Days Later are standouts from the 2000s as well. That's a pretty spread of timeline since 2000 and I feel like we've been fortunate to get a lot of really good modern horror films from A24 over the past few years. It really revitalized the genre for me.

I still think The Fourth Kind is one of the best horror movie in recent memory. Alien abduction scares the shit out of me though.

Some of the fourth kind really messed me up. The entire illusion of the owls is so creepy. Some of the stuff was odd and felt out of place.

We comparing movies now? The Witch is better. But it’s a narrow margin.
