Can totally hear the O'brother influence Riley mentioned at the end of Wake Up

I hear it a lot on the record, notably at the end of Hurricane as well.

15 listens or so in and here are my thoughts:

this might be their best work
the opener and closer are the best songs here
i can't listen to anything else

I started to move away from 24/7 listening around release, since I had it for weeks prior, but all it's made me do is fall back in love with all of their older material.

I have to say, this record has moved way up my thrice list today! I think it may be my number 3 behind Vhiessu and Beggars

This record didn't click with me until I read the lyrics along with it and realized how great they were. Just had an incredible listen. going again

I get the complaints about Wake Up but 2:55-3:25 is just great.

The main complaint from people seems to be the lyrics (Wake Up / Black Honey). They seem consistent with previous records to me.

on the surface the lyrics don't appear to be great, but I think once you dig deeper you can see that there are some great lyrical topics on the record.

Stay with me may seem like its just another love song, but the fact that its about a post apocalyptic romance is awesome!

I've kinda got this head canon going on that Hurricane-The Long Defeat-Stay With Me-Salt and Shadow are all telling a four-part story.

After reading the lyrics through a few times, it seems like Dustin has had his faith shaken quite a bit. Even stay with me, which seems quite optimistic when listening along, is pretty dark lyrically.

I actually can see that... Maybe even the window?

I'll update my mini-playlist and see, haha. Seneca as long-outro for The Long Defeat, too, but I was thinking more lyrically.

Since the window is about being locked in a room and not knowing what the world is like outside... If the world was destroyed you would be in a bunker of some sort wondering if it was safe to leave.. This may be a stretch though

I actually started to play in my mind what it would be like if the whole album was an apocalyptic concept record inspired by true events. It doesn't really fit but if you really made a stretch for it it could.

After what happened with Mars Hill it would be hard not to have it shaken

There is way more here than I originally thought.. I at first thought this was a run of a mill rock record but it has really grabbed a hold of me this weekend and shown itself to be an incredible piece of art

Also, imo Thrice has always been good at matching up the music to reflect what the lyrics are saying (alchemy index water especially) and the end of the window is another perfect example for me. That ending literally makes me picture light shining through a window haha. Is that weird?

Nope, it's interesting that he writes the lyrics second. So when the music is done he can write exactly how the music makes him feel and how it inspires him

We reach for the longest shadow

I love this record, and being more of a casual Thrice fan (I like 5-6 songs on each record from Vheissu on) I have no problem saying this is my favorite complete body of work for them. I will definitely be going back and listening to more of their discography now though. Picked the record up on a whim at my record store Sunday, and I plan on spinning it tonight with the lyrics for the first time, I'm really excited.

I agree that The Hurricane might be better as the center point of the album, but the song is incredible right out of the gate, and I love that as well.

Death from Above makes it seem pretty obvious to me there is a struggle with faith going on, but I haven't read the lyrics, just from what I picked up from listening.

I share the same faith as Dustin and probably ask a lot of the same questions as him (based on the books he reads and the ones I do, theological ideas posed in songs, and whatnot), but I think the message of Death From Above is very much political instead of religious in nature... though I do think it includes a nice hefty left hook at Driscoll in the second verse.

Out of nowhere, I just started singing: "it's gonna rain, it's gonna rain 'til the levy breaks" and I didn't mean to haha. A coworker was like "wut"
