Radiolab had a three part podcast series on the border and while it was a few months ago and I can't remember everything, back in the 90s when a new sector chief came in to El Paso, he created operation blockade which was very effective and deployed at major crossing points on the border. This forced migrants to use more dangerous roads which included the desert, and you see migrant deaths shoot up significantly and you can't even really quantify it because of how quickly the bodies decompose in the desert.

There was a report that the government put together and in the back of the report was a graph or chart that showed if you deployed operation blockade, migrant deaths would shoot up due to using more dangerous crossing points. And they chose to deploy it anyway.

This is dumb because the bill would also prevent individual towns from installing a higher fee or an outright ban. Also, the money made from the fee would be meant to be used to replace lead pipes and plumbing in schools, but the bill says they can divert it to the general fund to be used for other things if they want. Phil Murphy better veto this
