I like how you put worked in quotations as if the MCU isn’t the most successful modern cinematic franchise and has produced five films in the span of six years that have grossed over one billion and one over two billion. It more than worked. It got the receipe, made the cake, ate it afterwards, and then built a factory.

It might be about something, but it's still a terrible movie.

This has got to be one of the worst descriptions of the MCU films I have ever read lol. Of course it's a story. Everything from the formation of the avengers, to Tony accidentally creating Ultron in hopes of making Earth safer, which then ultimately leads to the Sovia Accords and the split up of the Avengers, leading to Civil War. All of this while also placing the infinity stones into some of the plots and planting the seeds for Thanos and what will eventually bring the Avengers back together. And that's only a synopsis of the Avenger films, not even the solo films which also have great ties to the overarching plot of the MCU. It's a great story as a matter of fact.

I don't understand the comparison of the MCU to Star Wars when it comes to lasting appeal when Star Wars has been a film franchise since the '70s and the MCU only started 10 years ago. I don't see the two in competition at all.

Titanic isn’t a bad film. I’d watch it over Avatar any day and Billy Zane is great at portraying a rich douchebag. I would say it has the best acting in the 2 billion club.

I'd rather vomit into my own asshole and drink it out with a straw then to have to watch either of those movies again.

Yes, it worked. I put it in quotations because I think it “works” primarily in the moment. I like doing Civil War, but it had issues. I remember thinking at the time that it was certainly an achievement in scale to orchestrate that many characters coming together and it’s making sense mostly and being a resonant journey. But so much of the praise of these movies (not all of it, but it’s a repeated talking point) is how impressive it is to see all these huge actors and characters in the same movie. That won’t hold up in 50 years. Then the cracks in something like Civil War start to show a little more (note: I still think it’s a mostly good movie). When your storytelling is based around navigating all these characters to be onscreen together, it isn’t built as much around theme or narrative. Marvel recognized that for the most part, trying to make good origin movies for their characters and use that as a basis. Avengers struck the balance. It was impressive scale and spectacle, and it worked as a contained movie with themes and narrative and characters driven by character. Now they build to the event, and why they still make decent movies along the way, there are diminishing returns as they inflate the powers of the characters and muddy the stakes and characters show up in movies with no real reason to be there and it all builds up to a half baked plan from a character who’s shown up in like 4 previous movies where he never articulated any form of psychology?

Yes. It “worked”. It will continue “working” for awhile. In 2048, I think people look at much of the MCU and it’s films differently than they’ll look at, say, the Force Awakens and the Last Jedi. They’ll remember the single films that worked on their own, an Avengers or Iron Man or Guardians, more than they’ll remember the grand narrative over the course of all these movies.

  9. And I thought my derailment of this thread was bad.

edit: ah, should've quoted. vomit and asshole should never be in the same sentence.

I don't think Civil War or Infinity War worked. Definitely not Civil War.

Haha sorry. I'll be calmer. I just fucking hate James "Pompus Dickbag" Cameron and his overrated shlock.

    Okay, now I'll calm down.

    Everyone ready to see Ronin?

Narratively I agree, I think both have problems, though I think Civil War is better than Infinity War.

Titanic is a hundred times better than both.

Let's just stop talking about Titanic. It's a worthless film that shouldn't even be subjected to murders. That would be too cruel a punishment.

Infinity War is half a movie that doesn't make any sense outside the context of having seen the other movies so it's hard to judge it as a movie

And it's only half a movie in the context of it's own singular story as well. Fucking mental.

Of course certain films will be remembered more than others in a franchise that is about to have 22 films in 11 years. The number of films that will be remembered already match the number of Star Wars films that will be remembered or are currently remembered if not more. Each film doesn’t have to be remembered for the franchise to have succeeded and to be iconic or we’ll have to count Star Wars out as well because the prequels and Solo definitly will fit in the list that Iron Man 2, Thor 2, Ant-Man 1 etc. go in.

As long as the MCU continues to create fans and deliver movies that satisfy both critics and audiences then future generations will be aware and curious of the older MCU “classic” films and people who grew up and watched those films and character arcs involved with them will still be attached to them for nostalgic purposes. The difference is that there will not be generational gaps between films to create anticipation.

Funny story. I've never fully seen the movie. Everytime it's on TV it's that one motorcycle chase scene. I have seen all of T3 though.
