I think having my sister there elevated it. She would start laughing and then that would make me start laughing; had I been with different people or by myself, I still would have found it amusing but I don't think I would have laughed.

Idk what was different about this movie for me, because some of the same (or similar) elements have been in movies that I love and found quite creepy, but for some reason I found them absurd in this movie.

Is there a link anywhere to where I can read about (or, even better, watch) the alternate ending?

Really liked this, not quite my favourite horror film from this year as A Quiet Place ever so slightly pips it but this had little to complain about in comparison to how much there is to praise. Just a shame I had to deal with a couple of old morons who felt the need to give an audio commentary to practically every scene.

Went to see this last night - I love horror movies but this was....hokey

First hour was excellent, cinematography and music brilliant throughout - Just got more and more daft as it reached the conclusion

Introducing seance type scenes into it evoked every crappy James Wan-esque horror of the past decade

Naked cult members (and the whole cult ending) felt a little silly (and inferior to something like Kill List)

Amping up the 'Demon' elements of the story created a suspension of disbelief so that anything could happen, however unlikely or random (Gabriel Byrne's demise, floating in corners, floating into tree houses)

I found it interesting and was entertained enough - I just didn't find it very scary! (and believe me I wanted to)

Gabriel Byrne combusting instead of Annie did confuse me.

it’s meant to show that nothing Annie could do would save her family. Their lives were on collision course with this ending the moment they were born. She tried to stop it and the cult/Satan/Paimon/whatever took the last tie to the outside world she had, allowing for her possession and ultimately, Peter’s.

I actually just rewatched it yesterday because I had a hankering for more horror with him and it’s so disappointing how close that movie gets to being good and then just keeps blowing it. It’s infinitely more watchable than End of Days to me though.

If you found this film funny then you aren't alone, some friends went to see this after I did and they found it funny as well. One of them even asked me if it is meant to be a spoof, so there is clearly something there in the film that makes people laugh. I on the other hand found a couple of moments funny but for the most part it was a consistent sense of unending dread with ever increasing levels of tension, not scary but effective at getting across the moods in the film.

I think the film having a demon antagonist makes it scarier. I believe in demons so that’s why, but also not being able to fight your way out of something because it’s a spirit and therefore not a human would suck balls.

I don't believe in literal demons but I still think they're one of the scariest concept you can use in horror. Humans doing deplorable things in horror isn't that scary to me and in many cases just crosses over to shock value that's more frustrating than remotely scary. Demons are probably behind or tied with the concept of insanity in horror which I've always thought is pretty terrifying. Witnessing and experiencing the fall and dissociation from reality opens up the door to basically throw whatever tf you want at your viewers without relying on anything supernatural or paranormal which makes it particularly scary imo.

I'm the complete opposite. The fact is humans DO do some of those deplorable things. Like Arial Castro for example. If that was made into a horror movie, that's terrifying to me because there are sick fucks out there that torture and rape people. I've never seen anything demonic and supernatural in real life so it does nothing for me.

I don't really believe in demons but I am a sucker for them in movies/books. I will admit when I first realized this was going to have a big supernatural/occult tie in to the story I didn't know how to think, mostly because the first half of this before all of that stuff is some of the most tense, beautiful and frightening stuff I've ever seen in a movie.

But I love it, I love the end, I love the cult and Annie flyin' around and sawing off her own head. Give me that shit pls

I once dated a girl named Paige and now I’m convinced that she was an incarnation of Paimon, which is obviously short for Paige Monster

I love demonology as a lore for films, and I love that this did that without ever showing the demon himself. I think it’s the presence of demons that can make things so scary.

Ya i definitely get why the human stuff would be scary to some. I was raised Catholic maybe I just have some of that lingering fear they try and instill into you lol, they’re particularly adamant about the devil/hell.
