Tom himself has said repeatedly that he only wanted to do the band on his own time and he didn't want to make the kind of music Mark wanted to make anymore. There's not much of an argument as to why things didn't work out between them to be had there.

I have no idea how to find it (buried in this thread somewhere), but there was a somewhat recent interview with Mark where he talked about their progression back in those days. I'm paraphrasing, but he basically said that he thought that Enema and, to a slightly lesser extent, TOYPAJ were the true sounds of blink-182 in his eyes, and he was satisfied with taking the band in that direction....which is why we got California and the throwback kind of sound as soon as Tom was out of the picture. TOYPAJ was the start of Tom trying to bring an "edge" to their sound so there was already some creative differences beginning to show. I think it probably just got worse with Untitled although that album was awesome.

Whenever I see people trying to defending Tom for the 2nd break up I always post this:

Blink-182 Blast 'Ungrateful, Disingenuous' Tom DeLonge

I know it's one sided from Mark and Travis but go and read Tom's response in his FB post where he doesn't deny any of what was said.

I don't put all the blame on Tom but don't think there should be equal blame between all 3 guys here.

I respect Mark continuing blink full time like he has, but I'd so much rather have a blink w/ Tom that only releases an album once or twice a decade than what we have now...

More blink albums with shitty Tom songs every 5 years ? No thank you.

There wouldn't be blink twice a decade with Tom. Not sure there would even be once. Probably still no blink album yet if they kept Tom around.

Right. And beyond that, you can make some assumptions based on the timeline of events... The releases took forever, they didn't collaborate, there was no producer, the sound was a mess and was about 80% Tom-heavy, they hardly rehearsed or did any media....

Suddenly, Tom.Is.Out, and everything is flipped. A double-album is cranked out in no time, the sound is pre-Untitled, there is a producer and guest writers, there is collaboration in every song, they toured and rehearsed full-time, no more false promises....

It's just obvious that Tom doesn't have much interest in collaborating and just wants what he wants. Which is fine. But I can't fathom why people think that their output as a band was healthier/better with Tom than it is now.

The guy couldn't even be bothered with finishing the WDNTW acoustic album. Not only did it come out a year late but he only recorded 4 out of the 10 songs. With him doing all of the To The Stars Academy stuff there's no way they would have recorded a new album during that time.

Damn, re-reading that Rolling Stone interview got me all sad again. I forgot how angry I was at Tom at the time.

Yup I hear you. I think it was/is completely justified for fans to have been upset at Tom. It really must have sucked being in that band outside of the whole making money and being a rock star thing. It seemed like Mark and Travis really bent over backwards for him to try and keep the band going. Really a shame how it all went down for a second time.

  12. In that KROQ interview with Mark he did seem to give off this vibe about CA as though he gets that there's people that didn't like the polished sound. IDK what do you think? Mark interview with KROQ in Vegas • r/Blink182

In an era when Axl Rose is touring with Slash and Duff and drawing rave reviews for it, I find it hard to believe Tom won't reunite (and maybe even become a halfway decent singer again) with Mark and Travis one day. But I can't see that happening for a very, very long time.

I don't think blink ever reached guns n roses level of fame...

  16. Does anyone under 25 know who guns n roses are? I'm actually half serious.

I mean they headline festivals on the regular, don't they? How old is the average festival-goer these days?

In terms of knowing their songs, that I'm not so sure about. Holy fuck - it's been a decade since Chinese Democracy was released.
