Was doing some reflecting on Thrice's discography and thinking on how the band has two sides to their sound that I really enjoy. They have both an epic-sounding rock side and a more adventurous experimental side. This album best capitalizes on the epic rock side, but less on the experimental side. Beggars best capitalized on the experimental side, but not as much on the epic rock side. I think I'd take epic over experimental when it comes to Thrice which is why I'd say the new album edges out Beggars just barely for me.

But I think the reason Vheissu is still my favorite Thrice album is because it capitalizes on both sides of the band that I love so much. It's equal parts epic and huge but also significantly diverse and experimental. Meanwhile, Major/Minor doesn't really capitalize on either all that much so it sort of falls flatter for me, even though it's perfectly solid.

Alchemy Indexes are another matter entirely just cause they all experiment with different sounds. I think if the next album balances the sound of TBEItBN with more experimentation (as it sounds like it could do) we could have another Vheissu on our hands.

 

I actually thought this too. His voice sounds a lot like Justin's on it.

 

I wonder if their Rhodes Piano was a hassle in live settings and discouraged them from writing with it as much as they did on Vheissu. I thought it'd become a permanent fixture in all their music since Vheissu.

 

I also thought Salt and Shadow sounded like it could be a Bon Iver song. Glad I'm not the only one.

 

Or does Justin sound like Dustin? After all, Dustin's falsetto was established well before Bon Iver made its mark.

 

Never really listened much to Thrice but have been checking out a lot of new releases today. Spinning this right now and on first listen I'm digging it. Black Honey is really cool and Stay With Me is fucking great.

 

I'm really digging this album a lot. Never been a huge Thrice fan but have always like certain songs. Sort of dug into their discography and liking some of the later stuff.

 

Tagging him to make sure he sees this, because I would also be a huge fan heh.

For anyone who pre-ordered the vinyl from Amazon, have you received any shipment notification? I don't mind it not shipping before its street date, but I figured I'd at least have a notification today saying that it went out.

 

I pre-ordered from Amazon and got my record yesterday. I don't remember them ever emailing me. But I checked my order status and it told me my estimated shipping and delivery date.

 

Ughhh not what I wanted to hear haha, but thank you for letting me know! I just hope nothing weird happened with my order.

Edit: Also it was the 180g correct? I couldn't find that information on the Amazon details page.

 

I hope my record/hoodie comes in the mail today, but I have my doubts. It'll probably be mid-next week. I just did standard shipping with the pre-order.

At any rate, This album is so wonderful. It flows from track to track extremely well. I can't get enough of The Long Defeat, Hurricane, Black Honey, Stay With Me, and Salt and Shadow (incredible closing track).

Thank you, Thrice! So nice to have new music from them in my life again.

 

I emailed them asking if it was 180g. They saithat they didn't know.

A guy on here got his copy early from B&N and said it wasn't 180g. Probably 140g.

Since they were both the same price, to the cent, on both websites, I cancelled my Amazon order. It was a second order anyway, to accompany the Limited Smoke.

Thanks for that. It's frustrating that Amazon rarely provides the weight. Unless it's specifically mentioned in the product title. But I just have to take advantage of that Prime shipping!

 

Record just arrived. I ordered and received confirmation of the smoke variant, but my copy is black.

It doesn't make an enormous difference to me, but what would be the best line of inquiry to follow up on the discrepancy?

 

Ordered vinyl/shirt combo. My tracking says it will be here next Friday haha

Call the people that sent it out, they actually never sent my order even though creating a label, I talked to them yesterday and they're sending it out with expedited shipping. I'm assuming they would be the ones to help you out too.

 

So I made a funky discovery last night: I think Stay With Me and Black Honey should be swapped in the tracklisting.

My playlist for the album fouled up for some reason while I was playing it on my phone, and it went straight from Seneca into Stay With Me, and it sounded monumentally better. The tones of the two match up really well, in my opinion, and it makes the album almost have a heavy-lighter-heavy feel that way with Black Honey leading into Death From Above and Whistleblower. Feels more cohesive to me.

 

I thought the exact same thing. I do enjoy Black Honey on it's own, but it doesn't quite fit directly after Seneca. Stay With Me would've been the better option imo.
