Wake Up is a little cock rocky but that's ok

    Hmmmmm...

I think this is a good rather than a great album. There are some really good moments on here - Hurricane is brilliant, the chorus to Blood On The Sand is huge, The Long Defeat is great, The Window is really cool - but there's too many missteps and parts that don't do enough for it to take that extra step. I like the start of Wake Up but it sounds like a typically mediocre Foo Fighters song for the most part. Stay With Me is pretty bad; that chorus is massively disappointing and doesn't provide a good pay off at all, just a bland line repeated a few times.

I feel like they can do better to be honest.

Not one song on here that hasn't thoroughly impressed me yet... some of the lyrics are a little generic but honestly that does very little to detract from how amazing this is.

I wonder if they'll have tour variants of this record......hmmmm

I can come around to that way of thinking, only want to add that a lot of the lyrical content was added after the music was done though according to the interviews I've read. It doesn't really bother me that much, just a minor critique really.. Also I've been listening to goodness so much so there's a chance im just used to hearing that space in music right now bc there is so much on that record ha

First impressions - it's really great and I think it might be their most cohesive album. It's interesting reading people's reactions to it and then listening for myself after that. I think much of the commentary on the album has been forced and way too hyperbolic - this is a record that needs to sit for awhile before it can be properly judged.

Gotta go ahead and heap some more praise onto "Hurricane." I don't know if I'm being hasty, but it's probably their best opener. It gives me chills the same way "Firebreather" does. Just unreal.

Whoa there, like I love Hurricane too but not going to know if it's better than Yellow Belly, All The World Is Mad, Broken Lungs, Firebreather, Image of the Invisible or Kill Me Quickly for a while imo they're all ridiculous openers

Yeah Hurricane is just absolutely massive. I am loving the guitar tones they captured on this record. And also, as was discussed before, I think the fact that this album doesn't really give you too much room to breathe, (aside from Seneca which I think is a perfect midway point) really works in its favor

The only other opener that I'd agree with being as close to powerful as Hurricane is Firebreather. The production value on this record just punches Hurricane up a notch or two. It sounds amazing and it's huge.

This album is so good. I didn't think anything would beat Radiohead this year, but this is a contender for sure.

Cold Cash and Colder Hearts is their best opener. And one of their most exhausting songs. In fact, I'd still rank their first five openers (Identity Crisis through Firebreather) higher than Hurricane. Could change, probably won't though.

The Window is sonic twins with Backdraft in a lot of ways. Realized that this morning.

It's mental for me seeing some people calling "Stay With Me" one of the weaker songs when it's easily my favourite on here.

After the first listen, I loved the Air/Water feel of Salt and Shadow and Stay With Me is a beautiful song. Hurricane was great too. I think my least favorite was The Long Defeat, but it might grow on me with time. Also Seneca, but I'm not a big fan of instrumental tracks anyway. I always thought Night Diving was too long and should have been a 3-4 minutes song. Seneca on the other hand is too short at 1 minute so it feels like it's just there for the sake of being there. Awesome album nonetheless! Gonna take a second listen in the car today.

I'll be at the first night of tour next week and I can't wait to see some of these live. Is it to early to assume they'll open with Hurricane? I can already see the crowd losing their minds when it kicks in.

That reminds me that I'm Still waiting for the Thrice tour where they open with Deadbolt just to shut up the people who yell for it. But I'm also at the point where I wouldn't be upset if they didn't play it at all on a tour, too.

I think Hurricane into Blood on the Sand into crowd pleaser is a safe bet for this tour, though.

In my humble opinion they should always open with Firebreather. It sounded so good on their farewell tour date I saw them, and thought how great it would be if they opened a set with it.
