This thread is peak "what the fuck are you talking about" for me

 

I would have loved it though if USA drew in Pool A and beat Russia....

 

i’d be more inclined to care if the US was doing well at sports if the US was doing better at being a country

 

Sports is about the only time patriotism should be a thing, in my book, because it should just be friendly competition. I understand the thought process behind not wanting to be all "rah rah, usa usa" when the country is in the state that it's in, but for so many athletes international competition is the peak of their sport and it's kinda unfair to them to put a damper on that.

That being said, I hate when idiots turn competition that has nothing to do with representing your country into some kind of nationalist bullshit (see: every fucking UFC fight).

 

yeah, that makes sense. i'll stop bein' a grump.

 

I'm not even a big soccer fan at all but you can just feel how HUGE of a deal the World Cup is when it comes around, very fascinating to me. Guys on those teams have been training for years just for a small pocket of time to hope they perform their best. Some of them don't! Can't imagine what it feels like.
