I posted this in the Solo thread, but maybe it'd fit better here:

I'd like to see the Boba Fett film's story incorporate Maul, Vader, and Jabba.

Some of the connective tissue in this franchise feels a bit much, and I don't necessarily want more of that. But, with the way they've already connected things, they could fit all those characters into a compelling Boba Fett character arc pretty easily without stretching things even further. There could be, say, just one scene where Boba Fett encounters Vader. Just enough to make the film the perfect piece of Star Wars villain fan service while, again, still prioritizing story and exploring a character ripe for exploration.

Oh, and something I didn't say in that thread, on the same note: I'd love to see Cliff Martinez do the Boba Fett score if Mangold directs. He's consistently awesome and different for Star Wars, and Mangold almost used him for Logan. Would be a cool fit.

Just because someone is more talented doesn’t mean they aren’t at all. After Jupiter Ascending , they don’t need to be anywhere near Star Wars.

Oh boy I can’t imagine my excitement if Maul was on the big screen again.

Let's be real though, as much as I'd love to see it, the Wachowskis will never do a Star Wars film, at least while Kathy Kennedy is running things. Because you do not tell the Wachowskis what to do.

So they are talented, but they shouldn’t be anywhere near Star Wars? Imagine if someone had said “After the Wolverine, James Mangold doesn’t need to be anywhere near the X-Men or Wolverine”.

    I would be sad.

    Jason would be happy.

The Wolverine was good up until the last 15-20 minutes. And to be fair, you won’t find me praising Mangold anywhere or being excited for a Fett movie at all. You trying to slam him means nothing to me.

My one and only point is that the Wacowskis (sp?) have an incredibly sloppy track record and I don’t want them involved in any way. Which means they will get announced next as that seems to be the pattern going for the stand alone movies.

Edit: saying someone has talent isn’t saying much. On a scale of 1-100 they could be put at a 10. Then of course you wouldn’t want them when there are so many better options.

I'm not slamming Mangold. Great directors make bad movies sometimes, or even misunderstood movies, and I don't think it should be held against them. I get that you personally don't like the Wachowski's body of work. That's your taste and that's fine. But you're telling me that you're adamantly against their getting the chance? When we're getting more Star Wars movies than we could ever possibly want or need, you're hardlined against them even handling one? The Wachowski's have imbibed every frame of everything they've worked on with personal, emotional meaning about identity. That's more than I think can be said for the recent works of J.J. Abrams, Ron Howard, Colin Treverrow, and Jon Favreau. They craft visual spectacle as well or better than anyone who has been hired for a Star Wars movie so far. I think that combination of their talents with their identity as filmmakers is an exciting possibility for Star Wars.

I don't like Alejandro Inarritu's movies at all. If he were announced for a Star Wars movie (he won't be, but I'm pulling a director I don't care for for sake of argument), that would be intriguing. For all the things I don't like about him, he's very talented, he isn't white, he has a very distinct auteur style that I can't see him compromising for a Disney blockbuster. I'd be for his getting the chance to direct one because it's different and stands out in the landscape of directors and writers hired by Disney for Star Wars so far. Being so against even giving someone a chance is weird to me. If they make a movie you don't like, there will be five more you enjoy. And what if they nail it? What if you actually like it? If there are going to be a million Star Wars movies, let there be room for all sorts of different kinds of Star Wars movies about all sorts of different things in all sorts of different styles.

The what if game is stupid. What if they pick a better director who makes an even better movie? Than I’d be so happy they weren’t chosen. The what if game doesn’t really prove anything.

All I can judge them on is their work, which has been bad overall. Why would I want them attached to my favorite franchise? Because of what if?

They tried to do a space opera/adventure type movie and it was boring garbage. So yea, I want them far away from Star Wars. I am sure there are many other directors just as worthy of that chance that don’t have as much garbage on their credit list.

  11. Speed Racer is the most underrated movie; a classic.

Jupiter Ascending is maybe the worst movie I've ever seen.

  12. If the movies underperform then they'll stop making them at some point. People are already freaking out about TLJ and Solo's box office numbers, and those numbers are good! If a SW or Marvel movie had a Jupiter Ascending like flop, I really do wonder what would happen.

We need more creative people making these movies and at the same time Disney won't let them once they get in there anyway, so I'm torn.

I thought Speed Racer was fine. Didn’t hate it, didn’t love it.

I’ve already said my feelings on JA.

That’s certainly a clear issue... but it does feel like Rian was able to do whatever he wanted to. While Gareth and Lord/Miller seemed to have a lot of interference. To me the opposite would have made more sense. More control over the episode sage while stand alones have more breathing room.

Apparently Rian Johnson got to do whatever he wanted. I don’t know if that’s true, who knows, but TLJ feels mostly like his uncompromisrd vision. That they fired Lord & Miller for Solo and went back to JJ for IX doesn’t bode super well for that ever happening again though.

Jupiter Ascending was bad. But lots of the directors Disney has hired for their franchises have made bad movies, and for some reason it’s not quite so easy for the Wachowskis to get second chances.

Every movie they made after Matrix 2 and 3 are second chances for them.

  17. Those Netflix checks are probably bigger and less meddling? I don't actually know but I want some Netflix money. Seems lots of people are going that route these days.

The Matrix 2 made good money and did fine to well critically. Revolutions was the bomb. They didn't direct another movie for five years. Then, when Speed Racer didn't do well, they had to wait another five years. Their Netflix show got the axe after two seasons despite critical success and a vocal fanbase. There are lots of directors who make shitty movies in back to back years. Sometimes they get the keys to big budget franchises. Largely, they still get endless opportunities. You're kidding yourself if you think they get the same chances as other directors.

I don't think so. Unique, stylistic, talented, trans filmmakers getting the chance to make the movies they want to make is a hill I'm comfortable defending. I want interesting, challenging movies made by interesting, challenging filmmakers. I'd love for them to get a platform like Star Wars.

  23. They wrote it. They didn’t direct all of Sense 8 either. It’s in the “working” category of what they do. I don’t agree with your idea they haven’t gotten a chance to make shit they wanna make. I think new younger talent would be better for SW.

Hard pass if to get those things it has to be the Wachowski’s. I just don’t like what they’ve done outside of a couple exceptions.
