I need to dabble a bit more on all three of those bands. Hellhammer doesn't have a lot of material and Celtic Frost has a pretty clear starting point (To Mega...), but where's the right point to begin with Bathory? Starting with the self-titled and go forward from there?

    ideall yes

    but

s/t is killer but IMO has more value as a historical artifact because of its approach and huge fucking influence

    other albums are “better”

maybe start with Blood Fire Death just to get yr teeth kicked in and then go back to s/t and progress from there

Under the Sign of the Black Mark is generally considered the best Bathory record. Blood Fire Death is the album that inadvertently spawned the Viking metal genre, and was perfected with Hammerheart, if that's your thing.

I may have posted these before, but here's a couple of death metal bands worth keeping an eye on.

Garroted released this 4-song EP. It is particularly riff-tastic:

And Superstition (20 Buck Spin) released a physical cassette of their demo. Very much looking forward to a debut:

Surging Throng of Evil's Might, by Superstition

I like BFD as a starting point because it is a good middle ground between the black/thrash/viking spaces the band occupies throughout their discog

What are some bands you can acknowledge has talented members or the band as a whole are talented but you never could get into them? Children of Bodom fits that for me.
