Uh... what did you find cool about this band to begin with? If a band has a certain sound and then switches it up completely, down even to the singing style, it's not going to be every fan's cup of tea. Nothing wrong with different fan expectations.

I had no clue what KC was even saying the first time I heard MJ.

her singing style isn't that different though? i mean its fine to not like this record, @Nick's post for example is valid and totally fair, but otherwise im seeing a lot of complaints and critiques that make little to no sense to me

there's a way for fans to not like a record without thinking it is lacking substance

  4. They make music I like to listen to.

I never said differently, I was specifically talking about the comment on "talent" and the myth that "indie-rock" is somehow higher up on the pantheon of needed talent than "indie-pop" music. That said I don't agree with the premise that they've completely switched it up — I think there's an easily traceable line between the band's previous work and this. I think, again, the JEW analogy works well here ... you can find traces of Clarity in everything they've done, even when they're moving between something more somber and esoteric to giant pop-songs.

I'd also make an argument for removing expectations when looking at art. Coming into something with an expectation makes sense, we can't ignore those completely, however, being able to experience something without the expectation can often help unlock the art in a way you never would have before.

  5. I’ve listened to this probably 100+ times since I got it a few months back and I still love it. Easily my favorite record of the year so far. (Vein is a close 2nd but far different ends of the music world)

Surprised to see a lot of people aren’t into it tbh

  6. I could see it being an After Laughter thing ... which started off with skeptics, and ended with everyone being like goddammit Paramore are the best aren't they?

This is literally the perfect example; I couldn't stand After Laughter. lol

I did love their self-titled though, even if it was a bit different.

Eh. Paramore went from pop punk to... poppy alt-rock.

After Laughter has become one of my favorite albums of all time, so any comparison from that to this bodes well for me.

With the exception of SGL and AZ, this ain't pop rock. It's straight up radio pop.

If you can't hear the rock undertones on this album we really have nothing more to discuss

    Their entire first two albums?

radio pop isn't a genre lol it just describes pop music that's on the radio, it tells you nothing about the sound since there's different styles of pop all over radio itself

I’ve been just kinda lurking in this conversation, but I would not call this radio pop

Also yeah what Jake said too, but beyond that there are a lot more interesting textures here than in what I think is being described as radio pop

Unless these songs are on the radio it is by definition not radio pop

Even Wikipedia classifies this as indie pop / dream pop / synth pop. Where are the rock / guitar based songs here?

By "radio pop" I mean anything that sounds like Yours / Can't Help Myself / MJ
