maybe @thesoftskeleton can weigh in on the ethical considerations but I think dogs are just naturally carnivorous and there's not much you can do as a vegetarian to avoid that

 

you need to look at the breed. Every breed has certain characteristics and natural traits.

What do you want the dog for?
Do you want to run with it and hike with it? Are you able to put at least an hour or more every day training it and exercising it? Then get a high-energy breed like a border collie, lab, australian shephard or cattle dog.

Do you want it for hanging out around the house that doesn't require too much training and exercise? Get a a shiba inu or a boston terrier.

Are you getting it from a shelter or adoption agency? make sure you check their medical history and vaccination records. know what you're getting into if it has any previous illnesses or issues that you'll have to budget for.

Ask why the dog is in the shelter? Was it aggressive towards children or was it surrendered for other reason? What's it's characteristics? How does it do around children like Aeryn? Does it have separation anxiety or any issues like that?

Those are the big ones I can think of off the top of my head.
