    also one of my favs

he used to have the record, but he is a really beautiful musician that goes waaaay beyond what could seem like a novelty (i.e. playing fast as fuck)

It's great to see him get the recognition he finally deserves, after putting out music for so many years without barely any notice; Peter Broderick, from the Erased Tapes label, discovered him and put an album out of new music on the label, which led to a tour of the US (where I got to see him live in Minneapolis). Now he's performing all over the world, doing various collaborations, etc. I remember him telling me at the Minneapolis show (I was hanging out in the lobby after doors opened, and he came through, we started talking, and eventually said "Where were you guys 30 years ago?", in a jokingly-but-serious tone, as in like it seems he appreciates all this newfound recognition, but it's come so late in his life). Hope to see whatever new material he puts out in the future.

Found an article about Prince's record collection that mentioned he had a lot of Horace Silver, so now I'm listening to this:

  7. The thing about Prince's collection reminds me that there used to be a collection on what.cd of every record that had been noted to influence Jerry and now that's gone forever and I'm sad :(

Damn. Why didn't anyone write that shit down?!? I'm hardly a Garcia fanatic, but I'd be picking through that.

Ever seen Elvis Costello's list he published?

  9. No, I'll have to check it out. One of the great guitar players on the Jerry list was Elizabeth Cotton who rules

I had no clue where to start with him but that one looked cool and I was a big fan. Hard bop that doesn't get all crazy dissonant hit the right spot for me for sure.

Yeah she's great. This is my shit:

I didn't know he'd cited her as an influence, but I can hear it. I feel like I can with Forgety, too.

Nailed it on the head. You would probably also like hank Mobley ... one of my favorite jazz writers.. died homeless in Philadelphia :(

  13. There's actually tons of songs that have direct influence from her...they played her song "Oh Babe It Ain't No Lie" all the time, a beautiful Jerry ballad. The Dead's "Sugaree" is is a kind of rework of her "Shake Sugaree." It's cool.

  14. Mobley's great, Soul Station legendary

Funk in deep freeze is one of my favorite jazz compositions... rhythm changed in a minor key.. who would have thought of that??

Finding out about her and Sister Rosetta Tharpe was such a wakeup call that the consensus "narrative" has some gaping holes.

I've heard Workout and was a fan. Any recommendations for a next listen from Silver or Mobley?

So as someone who is generally interested in jazz but uninformed, what would you folks say are essential albums for getting into the genre?

I'm not an expert or anything but I got interested primarily via Yoko Kanno and then through looking at canonical albums, A Love Supreme by John Coltrane which is still my favorite. going with the classics has been interesting for me. Kind of Blue is cool if you wanna ease into it it's pretty chill
