Thoughts? I went into it wanting to hate it, and having heard literally nothing of the concept, album title or singles, (if there are any?). I’m really enjoying it as a concept album, which surprises me, because I wasn’t huge on AM, and definitely of the opinion that they really needed to change things up going into a new album. It works brilliantly as a standalone piece. Nails the (what I imagine to be a 70s) hotel lobby soundtrack vibe really bloody well. I’d like to see this performed in full at shows, but have heard they’re playing older songs in this style now. Intriguing stuff while we wait for MFC!

Yeah there were no singles. They’re treating is one piece of music kind of thing. I’m not a huge Monkey’s fan, just listened through once. Going to take a few listens with headphones to totally grasp it I think!

Yeah, I lost interest in them after their second album, and only dabbled here and there briefly. (Hell, I loathed their first, and enjoyed the fourth) But I’m really enjoying this. I can see why it’s getting mixed reviews, as it’s quite different for them. I just read one that said ‘it’s smug and silly and entertaining’, and that nails it perfectly. That opener is brilliant haha.

Haha yeah that’s a great description! I’ve never been much of the fan. Really not into the early/indie side of them. Enjoy AM though so was keen to hear this one. I think the no singles prior to release was a good move, suits the album. Wouldn’t surprise me if MFC does just come out on June 1st with no singles.

For sure yeah! Though I’ve been really doubtful MFC would release that way, this has sort of restored my faith in the idea. I literally knew nothing about the new Arctic, and in a sense I’m glad. While we have the intriguing build-up to MFC, sonically, none of us really know what to expect. And all too often do I find myself overplaying singles, only for it to dilute my experience of hearing a new album for the first time.

There’s nothing to stop them releasing singles after, and the band has an enormous following. A sudden drop on June 1st would see serious success, regardless of whether there were singles released prior. What Jamie said about the album not being completely finished almost certainly suggests that it’s not happening though. Fingers crossed for a quick roll-out.

Exactly. Like, Monkey’s played Fallon last night so I suspect a video for that track will drop any day now.

It all depends on what Jamie means by that not completed comment really.

Listen to Destroyer’s album Kaputt instead. Same vibe, better songs. (One of my favorite albums of the decade, actually.)

Well, now I’m pretty convinced we don’t get any new music until June1, so I actually feel a bit less anxious. Now Now in a week, so I’ll be fine.

Past few weeks have been trash for releases. June 1st better be a good one.

kaputt is like someone's mid-narcosis dream of a prefab sprout record. the new am sounds like sitting poolside insulated by hard drugs while a rock band plays just out of periphery. i guess both records are oddly fixated on the uk music press and modernity

Imagine if they had released something a week ago when the hype was real. In the before-time when this thread wasn't a "what can we listen to instead" thread. Might have been a good idea for them to drop a single back then... but what do I know. I'll still be pumped when they do drop something.

  15. i mean whatever i'm listening to will be put on indefinite hold when they decide to release something, but i'm fickle.

I’m excited but the high levels of hype from when they started teasing stuff has passed for me.
