Nice write up and I totally agree. Such potent and politically charged music has only so much replay ability. I really enjoyed when she sang though and pretty much skipped the tracks where she was outright screaming.

Yeah the tracks where she sang were quite enjoyable. The tracks I'd skip are pretty much the 3 I listed in the "too aggressive" part.

    Thanks for the rec!

@sophos34 and I traded a few weeks ago and I recieved:

Darkest Hour - Godless Prophets and the Migrant Flora (2017; Southern Lord)

I'd heard of Darkest Hour before and they were always on my radar but for some reason I never got around to listening to them until now. @sophos34 gave me the choice of their most recent release or their favorite Deliver Us and I went with the most recent release to give myself something to look forward to in the event I enjoyed this record. Ultimately I found this record to be quite solid - it felt like a later career record from a band that is comfortable in their skin. I enjoyed the heaviness of the record and the guitar playing which included some killer solos was a nice departure to the majority of heavier music I currently listen to. I got a very Unearth vibe from this record and band in general. It was a cool listen and I'd be open to checking out additional records from them. Overall, I'm glad I listened but I was a bit lukewarm on this record.

@CobraKidJon sent me the following last week:

The Internet - Feel Good (2013; Odd Future, Sony)

I knew of The Internet before being assigned this record mainly because I was a big fan of Syd's 2017 record Fin and it came close to making my Top 15 records of the year list so I was very excited for this record. First off, I was kind of surprised by the style of Feel Good since I pretty much expected it to sound similar to vocalist Syd's solo material. The Internet is very different from Syd's darker more beat driven solo record. Feel Good is nothing like that and more of a soul record. The songs felt a little drawn out and Syd's melodies are nowhere near as infectious as on Fin. It feels like she is pushed more in the background in favor of the instrumentation. This modern soul style has never really caught on with me and I tend to lose interest early in the record. It was nice to her what Syd was doing before Fin but I'm very glad she was able to break away from The Internet and try something different were she can really showcase her voice.

    @disambigujason was my partner.

Gang of Youths - Go Farther In Lightness.

This album reminded me a lot of the Gaslight Anthem which is funny cause I haven't listened to the Gaslight Anthem in so long I'm surprised I picked up a similarity! Also reminds me of another band I can't place. I'm thinking an 00s indie band but I can't put my finger on it! Either way, I enjoyed the record. Ngl I was wondering if The Heart is a Muscle was a Carly Rae Jepsen cover lol. It is not. Idk if the album had a particular high for me but I enjoyed it consistently all the way thru

Black Foxxes - Reidi (or however u write it out! )

I thought it was great and right up my alley. Oh, It Had To be You might be my fave track (that build up!) but they're all good. Those vocals on Am I Losing It. The songs were roaring and compelling and the lyrics were relatable and interesting. I could see myself at a show of theirs! I first listened to it on a nice spring day as I was walking somewhere so it was a very enjoyable experience. I will def prob go back to the album. Idk much to say but only cause I'm not articulate so idk how else to say I liked it lol. I haven't kept up with many 2018 releases but this may be one of my faves so far

These reviews are short but I always have a hard time finding lots of ways to say I like something lol

Glad you liked em! BF one in particular made me smile haha. I should have yours tomorrow!

Also, BF’s previous album I’m Not Well is a bit heavier/more high energy if you think you may like that. Higher highs but lower lows imo.

I checked out Im Not Well over the weekend actually. I’m not sure how it sits with me compared to the newest one but I do like it

I think it’s staggeringly front heavy. I’m not Well, Husk, River, and Maple Summer are my top 4 from the band, but I put most of Reidi in between those 4 and the back 5 on INW.

The closer on INW is amazing tho. Pines. BF is one of my fave up and coming bands now. As much as i like INW this new one is even better but its a 1a/1b scenario imo.

I gave some songs a quick skim-through to see what to expect but haven’t given it a proper listen yet! Tbh I was kinda bored by the skimming but obv that’s not enough to go off of. I didn’t care for their last one.

But I too would call BF one of my fav up and comers!

I love that first Black Foxxes record, but I need to check out the new one. I gave it a listen or two and I enjoyed it, although it slightly washed over me a little at times. I suspect I just need to be the right mood for it to truly "click" with me.

  18. I'd have to give the edge to INW for now, but Reidi has done nothing but grow on me. I feel like they scratch slightly different itches and you can't go wrong with either

I wonder if it’s possible because I got exposed to them in reverse order tht I like Reidi more? Not that I dislike INW by any means

I think when you discover an album can definitely play a part in how you feel about it opposed to a different album by the same artist!

I’d take it a step farther and say it definitely affects it, and I think we vastly underestimate in general how much external factors affect our immediate impressions/current tastes.

Lies for the Liars is the first The Used album I heard and it's probably why I love it while most people don't like it.

This is true. Like if you go into a very happy sounding pop album on the worst day you’ve ever had, you may not like it as much as if you were in a good mood.

Like me this weekend, I had a lot of stress going on with my brother and everything, so any new stuff I tried to listen to felt sour, so I kind of didn’t check anything new out until I started feeling more inclined to do so without risking a tainted experience
