I say all the evidence that we need that they aren't going to suddenly go as heavy as Rockfest is that Riot Fest could have booked those same bands for years before Open Air was even a thing and for the most part didn't. I doubt they would have been booking them the last couple years if Open Air had never been started.

Why on earth would RF base their lineup on a festival that failed in their town??

To be fair, it's speculated that the festival didn't happen this year because primarily they couldn't secure a headliner, not because of financial difficulties. Open Air was pretty well attended and didn't fail.

    Edit: It did well.

Artist: ‘Chicago Open Air‘: Ozzy Osbourne, Kiss, Korn, Slayer, etc.
Venue: Bridgeview, IL – Toyota Park
    Date: Jul. 14-16th, 2017
    Gross Sales: $2,969,301
    Attendance/Capacity: 67,761 / 75,399
    Ticket Prices: $400, $179.50, $130, $60

I mean whatever the reason is it isn’t happening, we’re talking about a festival that existed for two years and now isn’t working out. RF has been around for a long time with a very specific niche among local fests and yet now everyone expects it to grab up all those acts?

    The intrusive whisper fascinates me

Well, if there’s one thing I’ve learned since joining this website, is that the ONE thing that brings us all together, and tears us all apart, is Limp Bizkit

True. Although I’d much rather have Smash Mouth at RF if we’re going down “is this a joke or not” territory.

No way. In joke territory limp bizkit is way more interesting than smash mouth

But I actually like Smash Mouth. And to my knowledge Steve Harwell hasn’t made pro-annexation Russian propaganda, so...

Haha i would most likely see smash mouth if they played I saw them once and it was fun everyone can continue to pretend they don't like them though

Limp Bizkit is a lot easier to mock in the grand scheme of things. I think the difference is...

If Smash Mouth were booked? They would know it's a joke. And they would likely make a comment about it.

If Limp Bizkit were booked? They would probably shout-out whatever post-hardcore band reunited that year, talk about how much they influenced them, and then dedicate "Break Stuff" to them.

I'd much prefer Riot Fest just play that answering machine message Fred Durst left on Taproot's answering machine on repeat for 60 minutes than have either perform. (And neither will ever perform, I'm 100% sure of it.)

Honestly I personally would MUCH rather Cake than a Limp Brisket..

I never expected to see a conversation of whether Limp BIzkit or Smash Mouth are better in a Riot Fest thread. I think that is just proof that they need to just release the lineup already!

This time next week, I'm sure we'll all be gushing and/or bitching about the line-up. Okay, maybe not exactly at this time (probably like this time next week, but like two hours later) but still.

    "I'll chew on a dog!"

Now we're talkin'... I am only SORTA joking.

Smash Mouth and/or Limp Bizkit would get huge draws, you guys. No, neither would properly headline, but never forget that nostalgia is very much a large part of Riot's charm and they know that. If there's any festival that does not give a fuck what you think of their line up, it's Riot Fest. They have curveballs every single year.

Jonah Matranga is doing a 20-year anniversary tour for Far's Water and Solutions record. That band was influential enough on a lot of post-hardcore bands that I could see that being one of the album plays this year.

Lower on the bill, for sure, but still... Dates aren't announced yet, but it's hitting the West coast in June, UK in July, the east coast throughout August, "and who knows after that." Seems like a possibility as a very early in the day main stage (thinking the That Dog slot from last year) or later on the second stage.

Did you just confirm a Smash Mouth / Limp Bisket / Nickleback set.

Out of curiosity: What would you consider to be a "curveball?"

They've booked some acts that have felt out of place or a bit left of what they would normally book, but the last few years there haven't been any acts that they've booked that felt like a major shift in tone or attitude. Not from my perspective, anyway.

I thought Peaches was kind of surprising last year but it still fit really well. Last year seemed overall to have fewer “wait what?” kind of acts compared to other years.

Did we at one point say that if band is playing Piqniq this year that they wouldn't be able to play Riot? Because Greta Van Fleet and The Neighbourhood are playing both Piqniq and Lolla, so I don't think that'll be deciding factor.
