@Colin Your Enthusiasm gave me Alexisonfire - Crisis

Really loved this record, great mix of punk and post hardcore. Dallas green kills it with his vocal performance. I’ll be going back to this a lot.

    4/5

@theagentcoma gave me two albums some time ago and it's time I finally review them.

The first one is White Pony by Deftones. I will be doing a track by track first listen type of review.

    8026A3E7-1E37-4596-A0FD-C2B366057094.jpeg

I have always meant to listen to some Deftones because I've heard some Thrice music being compared to Deftones.

Back to School (Mini Maggit): This is one of the singles from this album and it sets the pace of the album pretty well. The more I think about it, I'm pretty sure I've heard this band somewhere before and I wouldn't be surprised if I recognize a song somewhere on this album. We'll see later on. Pretty great track. 9/10

Feiticeira: This track is less screamy than the other one, but it also didn't grab me as much. Still not bad. 7/10

Digital Bath: Love the drums at the start of this one. It's a slower paced track, but I really love it. Like the vocals on this one. 10/10

Elite: Not a fan of this one. Instrumentally it is a great track, but there's way too much screaming on it for my tastes. It won the Grammy for Best Metal Performance in 2001 though which is pretty cool. 6/10

Rx Queen: Another good track and another one where I love the drum beat. It won't make it in my absolute favorites on this though. 8/10

Street Carp: Like the pace of this track. I think this tracks makes a good job of showcasing the best parts of this band. 9/10

Teenager: Wow I didn't expect this change of pace. This one is a slow jam and it's actually pretty good. The versatility of this band reminds me of Thrice and it's a great thing. 9/10

Knife Prty: I think this one is a pretty standard track. Didn't grab me much except for the drums once again. I love the drumwork on this album. I think this track could have been shorter. 7/10

Korea: Another okay track. Don't have much to say about this one. 7/10

Passenger: This one is 6 minutes long, but it doesn't feel long at all. It's great all around from the instrumentation to the vocals. This might be my favourite on the album. 10/10

Change (In the House of Flies): This is their most successful single to date. I thought it might be the one I would have heard before, but I don't recall hearing it before. It is a solid track and I can see why it was so successful. 9/10

Pink Maggit: This is the final track and it closes the album very well. It goes back to most of the sounds heard in the album. Not in my top favorites though. 8/10

Overall, I have enjoyed this album very much and will probably check out their other material when I have some time. I could definitely hear some similarities with Thrice, especially some Fire EP vibes in some parts.

Favorite tracks: Passenger, Digital Bath, Back to School, Street Carp, Teenager, Change.

    Final score: 8.5/10

Second album was Sprained Ankle by Julien Baker. This is another artist I meant to check out because I have always heard nice things about her around here.

    0775276C-2339-4213-8E32-3C129389CAC2.jpeg

Let's say this isn't the type of music I was expecting, especially after Deftones. It was a nice change of pace overall. It's just not the type of music I listen to that much. I prefer music that is a little more moving, so this was a little too mellow for me.

I'm not doing a track by track review for this one because my comments would probably have all been pretty much the same for every tracks. I've listened two times and most tracks pretty much blended together. Not to say that it is not good music, but they all were pretty similar to me. A standout might be the track Something.

I have to say that her voice is gorgeous and she is good at what she does.

My review seems overly negative, but I like the album for what it is. I just very rarely go back to that kind of music except in particular situations.

    7/10

Nice reviews @Micool1 White Pony is one of my top 10 albums of all times. Was cool seeing someone do a track by track of an album I love that’s quite old now. I’ve heard Julien Baker talked about a lot over the last few years but have never got round to checking her out (I should prob fix that some time).

FYI Back to School isn’t on the actual album it was re-released with that song after they were made to put out a radio hit. I love the song but it annoys me so much seeing it there on streaming services, especially at the start of the album.

I had no idea. That's messed up. I've only ever heard Back to School as the opening track and I don't know if I can ever unassociate it.

Here’s the vinyl I have of the album. The cd copies of the album I’ve owned over the years had back to school missing too.

From memory they released the Mini Maggot EP a little while after the album had been out which contained B2S and the track took off then, I’m sure if they ever physically re-packaged the album with B2S as the first track.

Just googled it as I couldn’t remember exactly but the wiki has a quote from Chino on there about it.
