I don't know why you'd want them separate post-buyout. If we're gonna have to deal with Disney monopolizing the industry and abusing their industry weight, by golly, we better at least get Wolverine with the Avengers in the process.

Sure, tonal homogeneity is lame, but that'll probably be just as likely either way. I'd rather hope that the MCU post-A4 doubles down on the Guardians/Ragnarok/Black Panther approach and doesn't replace the Infinity Stone/Thanos thread with a new event setup thread. And then let these properties enter this newly broadened world.

Also, I was thinking about this the other day: I want a Fantastic Four movie as soon as possible, but I'd be content with the X-Men characters organically showing up in other films first. Not in a repeat of the Avengers buildup, with Xavier doing the Nick Fury thing or some crap like that. But like, we've gotten a lot of X-Men stuff. I don't like what Marvel Studios did with Spidey, but elements of that approach could work with the mutants to start with.

Wolverine could be introduced in a Black Widow, Captain America (not that I expect a Cap 4), or Avengers film. Storm in Black Panther. Rogue in Captain Marvel. Beast in Avengers. Kitty Pryde, Iceman, and/or Firestar in Spider-Man. Cyclops in Champions, if that's a franchise they wanna adapt.

One more thought: Marvel Studios has dragged their feet with representation, and Fox has really squandered what they have to work with. When they do inevitably make their "Uncanny X-Men" or whatever, make Storm the team leader. Make Jubilee the POV character. Put Forge on the team. And so on. Don't make the main character Wolverine, Xavier, or even Scott Summers (as much as he deserves a worthy adaptation), and don't make the team 50%+ white dudes. You can use exclusively iconic, classic, and/or fan favorite characters with this franchise and also make it super inclusive. Do that.

If Marvel makes the X-Men films actually look and feel like X-Men then it will easily be another billion dollar franchise.

I don’t know how I would prefer to the films to be done, though. I doubt they’ll start with the original X-Men team and go on from there but I wouldn’t mind getting familiar with some core members before Wolverine shows up. I would actually like it if Wolverine didn’t show up until a fight with the Hulk in Avengers 5.

One thing I do hope for is that they bring in the outcast and segregated emotions/messages that caused me to like the X-Men comics more than others. The first film will more like likely not be a time piece set in the 60s but it would still work if they set it up in modern day with people loving heroes like the Avengers but feeling weird around some of the X-Men. Singer’s films did bring some of that stuff up but it also seemed real “Hollywood” and caked up to me as if he was doing it just to say that they had it in there.

Also, as much as I love Magneto, I would like to see more to the X-Men films than a philosophy battle between him and Xavier. And as Tim said above, show us a range of characters like Jubilee and Storm (I feel like Marvel will definitely take advantage of her and probably do a merge with Black Panther down the line). The roster of the X-Men is so large and diverse and I really want to see more than the core characters shine throughout the MCU.

Give me kickass Rogue, Shadowcat, Storm and Jubilee.

Fuck it just use the all female X-Men team from that Marvel NOW run and then we have a female team up movie that feels more natural than something that shoehorns in every female character in the MCU for the sake of it.

Just no more Phoenix stuff for awhile. I could live without an MCU Phoenix tbh

I know it’s highly unlikely they’d make the cast jump anyway.

I think Sophie could have been a great Jean if they didn’t rush her story. I doubt they’ll let the cast jump over. Marvel will want the audience to know this is a brand new take on X-Men and the same actors (sorry, Fassbender and McAvoy) will confuse people.

That would be so sick if wolverine popped up out of nowhere to take on the hulk. Who would be a good wolverine though? It’s hard for me to imagine anyone other than Jackman, just because that’s all I’ve ever seen

Just got back from seeing this. Let me tell you my favourite part.

Just as the heroes start dying and the harsh reality of what's happening begins to settle over the audience - of mostly children, I might add - like the thickest blanket in the world on the hottest night in recorded history in a house with a broken AC, a little kid sitting behind me says, in the absolute most despondent voice I have literally ever heard:

    "I hate this movie."

Yeah, welcome to the most unexpectedly formative moment of your entire life, pal. Sometimes the bad guys win, everyone you love dies, and there are precisely zero consequences. Enjoy reality.

Like, level of defeat in this kid's voice was profound. You'd think it would be reserved for something like finding out your wife of 25 years and 18 year old daughter walked out on you to move across country to enter into a polyamorous marriage with your estranged identical twin brother on the same day you get diagnosed with genital cancer. But nope. It was just Thanos making you watch while he ate your childhood.

Of course the sequel is gonna undo all that and the kid will in fact get his childhood back, but until then, dear sweet Christ.

Also Boseman's voice is hella sexy. Goddamn dude.

Btw I'm fully aware I'm a terrible person.

  11. I haven't seen The Hulk. Any of them. Don't know if I could do an actual 1-18 ranking simply because I don't know what to do with Infinity War right now, but here are the tiers I'd put them in at least.

    Top Tier
    Avengers
    Black Panther
    Winter Soldier
    Guardians
    Ragnarok

    Uhhh?
    Infinity War

    Middle Tier
    Ant Man
    Civil War
    Homecoming
    Guardians 2
    Iron Man

    Bottom Tier
    Age of Ultron
    The First Avenger
    Iron Man 2
    Iron Man 3
    Thor
    The Dark World

    Why Tilda Swinton
    Doctor Strange

As much as I enjoyed it, I feel like Infinity War is the least superhero movie while containing the most superheroes. It's almost like what Madoka is to the magical girl genre. Not even The Dark Knight was this dark, and that's basically a crime thriller more than anything. I think it's an admirable accomplishment on Marvel's part that they executed so well such a dreadful movie, but I have trouble ranking it as a superhero film for that very reason.

My 6 year old daughter has been wanting to see it, mainly because she knows the Guardians are in it and meet up with everyone else, so I spoiled most of it for her to see if she still wanted to go. She had one question for me — “What happens to Rocket?” When I told her, her entire demeanor changed and she was like, “Oh, I don’t care then. I still want to see it!” That cracked me up.

  14. Me: Wow, this movie killed so many of the main black people.
Friend I went to see it with, who was having trouble hearing me: Well, yeah, a lot of the action was in Wakanda.
Me: No, I said, main black people. Heimdall, T'Challa, Sam, and Fury.
Friend: Well, yeah, that's what happens when half of the population of the entire universe dies.
    Me: ...

Me: I kind of hope they don't just hit a reset button after this.
Another friend who went: There's no way they're not going to undo the snap. They won't just permanently kill Spidey and T'Challa while they have sequels confirmed.
Me: It'd be cool if they brought in Miles Morales instead.
Friend: Tom Holland is too likable. He has a lot of fans.
    Me: ...

After reading some of this thread, though, I feel like it's a good thing neither Stark, Cap, nor Thor temporarily died, leaving open the potential for their more permanent deaths in Avengers 4, plot armor be damned.

Thinking about it more, I don't think the potential of a reset invalidates the stakes of this movie. Just because everyone and their mother comes back in Supernatural, doesn't mean death doesn't mean anything in the season you're currently on.

All that aside, the snap deaths, while undeniably a dreadful few minutes, happen in such quick succession they don't really have the time to register the same as the earlier deaths, except for maybe Spidey channeling the Tenth Doctor. I was actually weirdly relieved Wanda didn't have to live on without Vision; Elizabeth Olsen's facial expressions in those last scenes almost killed me. I still feel like Gamora and Vision had the most poignant deaths, Gamora especially because 1) it successfully--for me, anyway--humanizes Thanos and 2) Quill's reaction, which, by the way, is perfectly understandable because it's so human. Like, if Thanos can mourn the loss of his child, and he's supposed to be the villain, shouldn't one of our heroes be able to react to finding out about the death of his loved one in that moment? It reminds me of the scene in Civil War where Tony says to Steve, "Did you know," and he tries to get him to calm down. Not gonna happen, pal.

I think I figured out why I can't see this as a superhero movie. It might as well have been named Thanos: Infinity War because he's the main character who actually achieves his goal and everyone else is just getting in his way. Aren't we all the good guy in our own life story?

There was a 4 or 5 year old girl in front of me when I saw this the second time. She was quiet the whole movie. After the beginning of the credits and the logo turns to ash... the theater is still dead quiet and tense and she goes "All done!" One of the bigger laughs our theater had.

The main reason that, according to the screenwriter, Tilda was picked is because they couldn’t go with a Tibetan actor otherwise China would have drastically flipped out. And Marvel didn’t want that. They also didn’t want to replace a Tibetan role with another Asian nationality and felt that the “Asian as a guru”, and the Ancient One character himself, was a bit outdated, racist, and stereotypical. They then decided to the change the role from male to female once they realized they couldn’t do a direct adaptation from the comics. Someone can say they could have went with a POC woman but they didn’t and went for a big name with recognition instead. This is Hollywood after all.

TheChens talk about the decision in regards to the Tibetan/China issues in this video if you want to hear it from someone who isn’t white and is more familiar with the tensions.

If you want to hear the screenwriter talk about it then it starts at 18:30 in this video.

It’s not ideal, yes. I don’t know if someone wants to pay separately for 18 movies due to there not being a bulk rent so I’m just listing options.

The closest and most ethical thing I can think of is $3.99 HD rentals for each film on YouTube if anyone wants to throw in $72 for a Marvel day.

The choice in who survived the snap was cool thematically, since Avengers 4 is the end of an era (allegedly), but man... I really hope the inevitable Avengers 5/New Avengers/whatever film is less white-dude-centric. I mean, is Rhodey the only confirmed non-white character between now and snap reversal? Or will some Wakandans and maybe Wong join the offensive against Thanos?

And, yeah, I'd like multiple original Avenger deaths, especially Tony. Though I'd really like to see Thor survive and go out to gather the remnant from Asgard instead. We don't need a Thor 4, and we can wait a long time before bringing Hemsworth back. But, narratively, that character never getting a chance to become a good king would suck.

We don't need a defense of a bad decision that even the director has repeatedly apologized for and maintains was an awful mistake.

If you knew who you were replying to, you'd know that he doesn't need your education on this matter. But even when not knowing... The decision was bad. The logic behind it was bad. We don't need to pretend it was a valid choice when there are so many ways to handle source material problems better (without whitewashing).

Someone is bringing up the oppression and political issues behind a major Hollywood decision on chorus.fm. Stop the presses! Like, come on. If we can’t discuss important things that go on being the scenes then what’s the point.

I knew someone wouldn’t know the difference between explaining why something happened and validating/justifying/defending it. I just didn’t think that person would be you. I gave him the details of the decision because in his post he said “why Tilda Swinton”. Keyword: why.

On another note, it would help you to maybe watch the video I posted of the two Chinese men explaining the tension between China and Tibet to learn about the oppression that’s going on there. If you don’t understanding why decisions are made then you can’t change them.

And yes, it was an awful mistake like the people in the video pointed out (if you watched it before commenting) because Marvel maintained censorship and bowed down before China instead of doing what’s right. This was a large political issueand knowing the politics behind it and challenging them are both important instead of closing your eyes to it (not reading about it and throwing all explanations about it away as “defenses”). Just like what the two guys in the video said, this stuff has been going on for a while and the awareness of it needs to be spread out.

Shuri, M’Baku, and Okoye. The last two were shown at the end with one of their reactions of the snap being focused on. M’Baku might not be featured much but Shuri and Okoye will probably get screen time.
