Set times should be required for any show with more than one opener.

I'm just not even into shows all that much anymore. Unless it's a really special set or tour, I'm not gonna go.

All the negative aspects of shows have overcome the positives.

i see the pros and cons for that, you also don't want people totally ignoring the openers

I can't remember the last time I was into an opener I didn't already know before the show. It's actually bumming me out because I got into plenty of artists I like by seeing them for the first time at a show.

Hell my #2 album of all time and one of my favorite artists I only lucked into knowing because they opened a Goo Goo Dolls show I was at.

Skipping the opener always feels rude to me, plus there are definitely bands like Torres and Alvvays I discovered by seeing them as openers that are awesome and I would've missed out on

I also don't go to insane shows with 50 openers

Responding to lots of posts in this thread because I have lots of thought re: your supposedly unpopular musical opinions:

As a general sentiment and an old, this is something I can get behind. This is a bit genre dependent tho. If I'm getting two hours of Thrice, I'm not gonna complain. If I'm gonna get two hours of Cult Leader, I'll probably find a bar stool to perch up on to watch most of the set and be grumpy by the end of it.

Try making it through a two hour Sunn O))) or Earth set. Every drone metal show I've ever seen, I've enjoyed the band, but I wish they would have played a slightly shorter set. I almost fell asleep on my feet at both of those shows.

Gonna disagree with this one pretty hard and say context matters a lot. Some examples of awesome covers that I've seen over the last few years that blew me away that don't have a subsequent studio release:

-Ringworm covering Motorhead's Iron Fist after Lemmy died was fucking epic when I saw it.
-These are a pair of awful examples considering their recent histories, but I enjoyed Taake's cover of GG Allin's Die When You Die and YAITW's cover of Breaking the Law by Judas Priest when they played them live.
-Hot Water Music recently covered Avail's Simple Song with Tim Barry when they toured Germany last month. I'd come out of mosh retirement for that if they played it in the states (for pretty much anything Avail related, now that I think about it).

There are others over the years that I enjoyed equally as much, but these are the ones that come to mind right now. I do agree though that we don't need cringeworthy covers that would fit right at home on a Punk Goes Whatever release.

Agreed 100%. I love seeing local bands, but I don't need to see 5+ bands that are going to be forgettable as hell before getting to a memorable headliner. For example, I wanted to go see Ingested when they came through the area this past weekend when they were on tour with 2 US acts. The promoter also tacked on 5 regional/local openers and made it this shitty mini-fest that I didn't want to deal with...No non-fest show needs 7!!!! openers. Period.

Agreed 100%. I prefer set times even for shows that have one local opener because I'm typically commuting into the city to see them...most of the time it's because I want to know when I need to be there to see the openers.

45 to an hour is a max for me, but I could certainly make exceptions. Openers obv. should play less. Certainly seems more reasonable than that goofy-ass “no band should play over 20 mins” take making the rounds on twitter.

once i went to a show at planet trog with one headliner and two secondaries. an additional four unlisted bands played, all of whom were clearly just the bands of dudes hanging out in the crowd lol. it was five hours long

    forbidden chalice.

Invented would be a much better album if My Best Theory and Evidence were swapped. Evidence lends itself to the sound of the opener and MBT compliments Higher Devotion and makes it less jarring. Invented's back and forth between stylistic choices in the first 4 tracks really bog it down for me and it is easily fixed by reordering the two tracks.

Not sure if this is unpopular or not, but I know the concept of altering tracklistings can be controversial.

my problem with invented is the middle imo coffee and cigarettes to action needs an audience is a pretty sluggish run of songs, even though some of them are excellent tracks
