Who said it was different? I didn't degrade his role in the band by stating he's a hired gun, he's literally hired to do that and when he isn't needed, he'll be released from that role. While I don't have anything to back it up, I'd put my money on the likelihood that he isn't viewed by the blink-182 corporation as an equal member.

Let's not pretend like all rock bands are hired guns put together to churn out hits and make money. While it exists, it wasn't this bands origin and there are plenty of bands that exist that formed naturally.

Anyways, I'm not going to argue about it. It's whatever at this point because blink-182 is gross these days.

Sure if we ignore Travis Barker and most of this band’s career then your second paragraph is true.

 

I don’t. I’m not saying he’s a bad songwriter, I’m not saying he’s less of a person because of it or somehow not currently “in blink.” I was simply speculating as to why this piece of merch excluded him. I’m a huge Alkaline Trio fan and a fan of his solo stuff.

Same reason Funko doesn’t make Pops for every player on a team or character in a movie — it makes the shit that they think will sell. Mark and Travis are celebrities. It’s that simple.

 

Like I said, I don’t keep up blinks merch, I dont really know much about these funko things. Blink being Mark and Travis is kinda what I was saying about the celebrity thing.

They’re the face of blink. I don’t think it honestly matters who fills Skibas role (if anyone even ever does.) I think they could go out with Feldy on tour and only diehards and people around this community would notice. That’s what I was getting at. Poor choice of words.

 

And I disagree with you and think that’s degrading by definition. Of course that position matters to the band and songwriting.

 

Then disagree I guess. I don’t think Matt’s role in blink 182 is nearly as critical as say his role in Alkaline. I think Mark and Travis could churn out another record like California, take someone else on tour, and it go largely unnoticed.

 

And you don’t think these words are degrading, ok. Your two points don’t negate his role in the band. His role being not as critical as it is in Alk3 doesn’t mean it’s worthless or not still an important role, and the band being able to write and tour with someone else doesn’t either. No one would argue Toms importance and yet .... it went largely unnoticed that he’s not a member of the band for the touring and radio community. Still a member of the band and important in the process of those songs being written and created. So is Matt.

You’re mistaking the idea that because someone *can be* replaced that means they’re not important. That’s a fallacy.

 

I never said it’s not important that because Matt is here, the band can tour and be active again. It is important and for the sake of the band, I’m glad they can do that. But I don’t think Matt plays a critical role in the band outside of their ability to tour, and quite frankly, lots of people can fill that role and we’d get similar results. Maybe that’s reflective of my feelings towards California, which I think is a boring album.

But I still don’t think it’s gross or degrading. Matt is a better songwriter than Mark or Travis in my opinion and he’s better than California or blink-182 in general. So I can’t really say that without degrading the other two either. Obviously that’s opinion and people can argue that all day, but people come in this thread and shit all over Tom or Scott or whatever, and I’m to assume that they understand the importance of those individuals and contributions? We’re pulling at straws there and it’s a never ending argument.

Well that’s what I just suggested we stop doing. I don’t agree and you don’t agree. A good place to stop would be here.

 

To a large degree anybody they bring in yeah, the record wouldn't be too far off from California because the first album with a new member had to play it safe to a degree to get the band back on track. But pretty sure three of the consensus best songs on the album, Bored To Death, Left Alone and Cynical show the difference Matt makes. Everybody credits Matt for being the major difference on Left Alone. Seems everybody thinks "oh this doesn't sound like Trio so Matt couldn't have been involved in this" there's no basis for what Skiba trying to write blink songs sounds like.

 

San Diego is best song on the album hands down!

 

That's definitely my personal favorite.

 

California just isn't my thing anymore.

Ummmm... you guys are forgetting "Bored To Death." The best song on California, and classic Blink. And I'm very partial to "She's Out Of Her Mind" as well.

 

My white one went to shit though. Pink sweat stains. Yellow sweat stains. Wobbly collar. Green held up well

 

Dreaming here but what if they weren't recording Blink songs at all and that Matt was busy with Alk 3. Mark & Travis where doing some new +44 material

Feldmann +44 would still just be Feldmann Blink-182, but songs more like "Bottom of the Ocean" and less like "Rabbit Hole."
